If you were engaged in a firefight, whenever you reloaded your rifle did you just drop your old mag? Were you expected to always keep all of them? What happened if you lost a spent mag in battle? Were they easy to replace whenever you got re supplied?

Try to secure the mag when able. If you dropped one you could get another pretty easy.

ETA: Mostly cause it seemed like everyone carried 2-3 extra loaded mags in their assault pack or ruck. And each vehicle had a between 15-20 loaded mags.

Mags are an expendable item in the military supply system.  In regular terms, it's an acceptable loss.

Most of the time when you get in country and start the RIP (Relief in Place) process the guys from the unit before you hand off mags filled with ammo. I could pretty much as the Supply SGT or Armorer when I was on the line and get them. When I became Armorer every month I'd go around and ask if anyone wanted more mags. Except when we were issued PMAGs which I handed everyone in the Company 7 PMAGs. Most still kept the USGI Aluminum mags and kept them loaded up.

That's why you have a dump pouch.  Empty mag goes in there.

Sure, nobody's going to complain about lost mags in a combat situation - it'll just be written off.  But it's not exactly a good habit to foster given that resupply is going to come on stripper clips.  Got to have something to put them into.

Our resupply came how we requested. Either Mags or Stripper clips, always good for the ASP to have extra loaded mags.

ETA: When I was armorer I helped in the ASP and had at least 100 extra mags loaded and stored in the ASP for resupply

Your first mounted patrol teaches you that all that Gucci shit on your vest and on your legs does nothing but get snagged on every fucking thing in the humvee

The first dismount patrol, well, we all know which way someone walks when we see a trail of shit behind them as they shed weight.

I was C9 gunner, and I had to buy all my nutsacks.  No way I was dropping them.  Into the dump pouch they went.

Canadian army is too friggin' poor to start tossing empty mags everywhere, so we were trained to hold onto them.  Everyone bought a dump pouch, so that's where we put them.

Necessity is one thing. I did try my best to keep mags.

Those to which I refer are the tactical Timmy's. You know. The kid who buys ever pouch at the tac store and molle's it to his vest. Fucker can't hardly move let alone be any sort of asset.

How much time gets devoted to loading all those mags?

Do soldiers sit in a group and do it, or is it generally an individual thing?

If the ammo came packed on clips or already in mags, I assume not much time

Stripper Clips and a Speed loader. Doesn't take that long. If it was a new issue (Just came in country) each person usually loads their magazines.

To load mags for the ASP I'd get some privates to help out, about 5 or so and we'd spend 20-30 mins loaded mags with fresh M855A1

I saw a video of soldiers UNLOADing their mags by hand one round at a time. It looked tedious but they were happy because they were headed home.

Only mags I unloaded to take home were my H&K mags or PMAGs, if it was a USGI mag. We'd just one-for-one swap with the incoming unit or for empty mags from our supply and leave them in the ASP.

It doesn't take long to dump all the ammo...about 15 seconds if you use a leatherman to knock the rounds out.
Some units gave us their full mags when they did their RIP/TOA, but they were a year old and sandy. We had time, we cleaned the rounds then put them back in.

Our S4 had PALLETS of magazines by the way.

99% of the guys that answer you as a "combat vet" may have deoyed but never fired their weapon in combat a single time or on a regular basis. I'd take anything said with a grain of salt.

You know the answer already. It depends. If you can save them, you do. If you lose some you can get more.

Apparently a POG unit. Infantry and group has that shit worked out well before deploying.

many, many years ago my gunner kicked the fire extinguisher (it was located next to the TL seat, a little forward of the  gunners foot area).. I got doused with the content of the extinguisher before I could un-ass, I moved that every time i got in the vehicle after that

Yes an Infantry unit. The individuals in question were an NBC guy and a supply guy.

They did look cute.

Army units tend to not use them; while the Marine Corps issues a dump pouch to everyone in its divisions
