Picked up a new Honda 2000i generator today , get it home and it wont start.  I'm a car guy so I know we need three things.  (1) fuel , we have it.  (2) air - clean filter.  (3) spark ... don't think we got any there.  plug is brand new , no fouling.   Already removed the "start/stop" plug from the front , still nothing.

Whats the chance of a new Honda coming in with a non-working coil pack?

Anything else I should be checking out in the mean time?

Have you got the switch in the "run" position?

Yes.  Even removed the "on / off" switch plug to bypass that and eliminate a possibility of a failure point.  Same with , without , on or off position on the front panel switch.

My guess is gunked-up carburetor.  Try a fuel additive.

With my genny, I always shut off the fuel and let it run out of gas when I shut it off, that way, there is never fuel sitting in the carb.  Been working since 2007 with no issues.

Oil?  If it senses a low level, it will not run.

Remove plug, put cap on, ground to metal, pull it over look for spark.  Then you wont have to guess if its spark. Or did you do this already and you are positive its not spark?

Definitely true.

OP if it is brand new can't you just let the dealer sort it out? It's a great gennie and mine has always been reliable, but perhaps yours has some flaw that the dealer should be able to diagnose pronto and fix under warranty.

BRAND NEW out of the box.  no fuel in the system to gum it up , oil is filled to proper level.  Its never been started before.

Going to grab a new spark plug on the -99.9% chance of a F-ed up plug that's new from NGK not working.

Could have oil but the sensor could be bad. Happened to a friend of mine on a new unit. Try bypassing the low oil sensor.

Can you try to turn the engine over with the spark plug out of the motor, but grounded against the block... to see if you are getting spark?

I don't know anything about generators, is there a coil wire long enough to let you do this?

Is the load/inverter turned off?

Make sure it's on level ground.

It it's not the oil sensor will read low and it won't run.

The owner's manual, perhaps?

Did you open the fuel tank vent (on the fuel cap)?

Started on the second pull once I got out a multi-meter and figured out there was a loose connection in the electrical wiring.  Pisses me off you spend that much $$$ on a generator that everyone swears by and I manage to get the one  I have to diagnose and play with.  Such is life.

One step closer to finishing that prepping list though

Where exactly in the wiring was the fault?  How did you find it?  Was it an obvious loose wire or broken connector? Just curious in case mine craps out one day...

Hey, at least you COULD diagnose it. Lucky Honda, saved them a headache.

Did you jiggle it a little bit?

I like it when a dealer tells you it's already 'full of fuel' and has been test ran, etc.  Great, so now I know there has been ethanol fuel sitting still in the carb for the past few months while it was dormant on the shelf

Take the plug off and pour some fuel in the cylinder and try it.
