Everybody suffers here and there with the occasional grammar slip up caused by lack of proof reading texts and whatnot, but what about those who habitually do it, know they have bad grammar, yet do nothing about it? I have a buddy that I have known for a number of years and this guy struggles! Smart guy, educated, a little eccentric, but knows what grammar is nonetheless. Yet he can't keep a sentence error free to save his life, both on a screen (computer/phone) and on paper. It doesn't bother him a bit that it is like that, but it just seems weird to me that he doesn't do anything about it. It has always bugged the hell out of me to read something he wrote down. Am I alone for thinking this, or are there others out there?

Edit: Fixed. I must be as bad as he is.....

My degree is in English Lit. and Communications.  I try and proof what I type and I go back and edit if I see something that I missed and it happens if you bang out enough words.

Some people here, not so much so.

I went to law school and writing was so poor, across the board, here in Miami, that we had to take a freakin' remedial English writing class, so nothing here surprises me in the least.

It does bug me.  Then I realize that I suck at math and have no desire to put any effort into rectifying that so I guess turnabout's fair play.

yeah--hate to break it to you man, but you're in pretty rough shape here.  serious probs with sentence structure, punctuation, formal style, etc.

what you wrote is fine for informal conversation, but if you're starting a thread about someone else's poor use of grammar, you're establishing higher expectations for yourself from the get-go.  not trying to be an asshole, but i grade ~100pp a week of writing from college students.  you would have lost half a letter grade for the stuff in red.

We have too many words and rules anyway, language needs to evolve into a more efficient form. It's actually quite admirable that people have been able to transition to 140 character messages. Efficiency is good, right?

math is the most efficient language there is, but it sacrifices a tremendous amount of expressive power in order to gain clarity.  any drive for linguistic efficiency must entail a simplification and streamlining of syntax (how we sequence words to convey different meanings) or lexicon (the words themselves).  simplifying syntax would require a broader lexicon in order to avoid losing expressive power, and trimming down the lexicon would necessitate more syntax (for exactly the same reason).

simplifying both would entail eliminating the ability to convey many types of meaning.

a living language is flexible, dynamic, and messy.  and that's exactly what makes it work well.
