Anyone have any recommendation for any cheap night vision devices? Around $100-300. Its for my son to play in the woods. I do not need any PVS 7s or PVS 14s nor do I have that much money to spend on a kids toy.
Thanks |

1. Go here http://www.ar15.com/forums/f_6/18_Night_Vision.html
2. Read 3. ???? 4. Profit Seriously though, cheap and night vision do not go hand in hand. That amount of $ will not get you anything usable. You are better of getting a really nice light for that $. |

I began that rout in the cheap end of the pool and (very quickly) returned the cheap shit and worked an extra year at my 2nd job after paying for my kid's school. That gave me the 6-K for totally rebuilt, PVS-7's and $3-K Thermals. Worth every f-king minute! $3k for thermals? What and where? |

Thanks, I couldnt find the Night vision folder. I am thinking of getting it just to let my kids play infantryman. I don't want to give them my pair of PVS 14s. In the OP you said you didn't need PVS-7's or 14's, and couldn't afford them. Now you suddenly own a pair of PVS-14's? |

I bought a 200 pair of russian gen 1 NVD's. they are an interesting toy but not too useful. for that money honestly, get a few really good flashlights.
I hate to say that but I'm a cheap bastard and want good stuff cheap. in this case though, there is not much functional NV gear for 200 bucks. I finally saved up and bought gen3 and those are actually useful. |

| I said i didn't need a pair of PVS 14s. I just wanted something cheap of the kids to play around with. He is 10. I have seen plenty of soldiers destroy their PVS 14s at night. You will be surprised what an infantryman can do just walking around at night in the woods. |

Nope. I got into NV with a D-300 milspec unit, which many consider the bottom line of getting into night vision. It's nice for Gen 2+; but the limitations of it start showing once a lack of moonlight or a lot of cloud cover start blocking ambient starlight and moonlight. Then you need a way to mount it to your noggin.
Just the D-300 used cost me $750; not counting the NOROTOS mount, then the J-arm mount. Thankfully I had a PASGT helmet laying around, so I didn't have to spend any money on that. |

xgen digital mono, about $110 with the arfcom discount at optics planet. there have been a few threads and reviews on it. the concensus is that commercial digital is toy grade, and of those available the xgen was the best value. about on par with gen 1 nv. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

If you're looking for something just for the kids to play with, those are awesome. Eta: Jakks eyeclopse is another toy nvg that I got my kid & he loves it. |

Guys I think he's just looking for a toy that works similarly to a camcorder or similar to the NVGs that came with the Modern Warfare 2 deluxe edition. Context. Jesus Christ. This is like a guy asking for advice on a power wheels car for his kid and you guys saying anything less than a REAL jeep is a waste.

And " kids toy." |

Someone posted a set of NVGS with a Skull mount for his kid that he paid under 300. Used em chasing fireflies or something.

$300? Just get a pair of green sunglasses badass flashlight. Any "NOD" you could get for that price would be a waste of circuitry. Depends. I've got a gen 2 Russian hand held spotting type scope/not a weapon scope.. I bought the thing at Wal-Mart about 10 years ago and it's been solid as a rock and works pretty damn good for what it is. It has an IR illuminator and is a lot better than what I read about in some of these posts. |

Again I see most in GD didn't read the post. He said for his kid, not for the OP to use. Why the heck would he spend $1K-3k for a toy for his kid to play GI Joe with unless he's got crazy money Again, I see someone didn't read the thread before posting.

They all seem to be GEN-1 now but mine is GEN-2 and is made a bit differently but is basically the same. |

My son has a set of these ($30-50 depending on coupons and sales): LINK
NOT durable, but fun! You do NOT have depth perception, have to manually focus, and visibility is very dependent on your IR projectors but they are fun. I can read a book in a dark room with them on, but walking without depth perception (like in the woods or on stairs) takes some practice. |
