Just ran across this photo from Veitnam:

The soldier on the right has a very short M1 Carbine, never saw one cut that short.

Yep, in the Air Cav. we had all sorts of those sawed-off weapons.  More than likely it's an M-2 having select-fire capability.

We would put every 3rd round as a tracer and on auto you didn't need sights.

Field expedient.

BTW, back in the '70s either Universal or Plainfield used to make a cut-off carbine pistol.  I hated them.

I suspect these guys may be tunnel rats.  A small portable rifle would come in handy down in the tunnels.

If it was Universal, they're all POS. That's why they're nowhere near the value of even the most common, most beat up GI carbines.

Having read about those tunnel rats, my only unanswered question is how they managed to drag that pair of big brass balls along.

Crawling into an ant farm of dark, insect-infested crawling-room-only networks of tunnels underground, in darkness, with punji stake traps and screaming VCs that could pop out of anywhere? Serious guts.

One of my relatives was an adviser over there in the early part of the conflict, and years ago he described having an M2 carbine that had the butt stock sawed off behind the grip area, with the barrel shortened in front of the forearm.  He said it retained the front sight, and whoever did the work did a good job.  He carried a TSMG for a period of time until he ran across this M2 pistol hybrid and preferred it over the Thomson because of the lighter weight.

I've only seen one other picture of a carbine as described, and I always wonder if there's a picture of Jim in Vietnam with his shortened Carbine out there on the internet somewhere.

Actually the guy in the middle and the guy on the left are conjoined twins. The Kneely brothers.

I think Id take the unhandiness of a M16A1 over something without sights

The first cut down carbine I ever saw was an M1A1 which belonged to a pilot.

Yes, yes --- But did he load 30 rounds in to his 30 round magazine....or just 28?

This was posted by another member here, looks a little more useful with the front sight.
