Just ran across this photo from Veitnam: http://i.imgur.com/QobwBwu.jpg The soldier on the right has a very short M1 Carbine, never saw one cut that short. I suspect these guys may be tunnel rats. A small portable rifle would come in handy down in the tunnels. |

One of my relatives was an adviser over there in the early part of the conflict, and years ago he described having an M2 carbine that had the butt stock sawed off behind the grip area, with the barrel shortened in front of the forearm. He said it retained the front sight, and whoever did the work did a good job. He carried a TSMG for a period of time until he ran across this M2 pistol hybrid and preferred it over the Thomson because of the lighter weight.
I've only seen one other picture of a carbine as described, and I always wonder if there's a picture of Jim in Vietnam with his shortened Carbine out there on the internet somewhere. |

Having read about those tunnel rats, my only unanswered question is how they managed to drag that pair of big brass balls along.
Crawling into an ant farm of dark, insect-infested crawling-room-only networks of tunnels underground, in darkness, with punji stake traps and screaming VCs that could pop out of anywhere? Serious guts. http://centurion-mbt.synthasite.com/resources/VC%20Tunnels%202.jpg at that diagram.. I never knew they got THAT complicated.
Balls of steel indeed- my hats of the those brave/crazy SOBs |
