True enough.. That being said, would you rather hire an attractive, polished person with a degree or dowdy looking person with a degree to represent your company?

Good point. If everything else is even (education, work ethic, etc...) then looks may be the deciding factor on getting the job, especially if the job involved interacting with clients, the public or other professionals outside of the company.

I know that in company I work for all of our marketing people are in shape (they may not be fitness freaks but they are not overweight) and dress professionally. Some of the engineers may be heavy and look rumpled but they tend to only interact with each other and handle the technical side of things.

I think the guy writing the article might know a little something about business and the general public.

And if both have the same qualifications the tie goes to the T&A every time.

This is true. Given equal academic qualifications, the person who has the better appearance will typically get hired. That said, it isn't just outward appearance. Body language has a lot to do with it as well. The person who projects a confident image is going to be better off than the person who fidgets, won't make eye contact, has a sweaty or limp handshake, etc. There probably are some anomalies, but this is interviewing 101.

Good, proper, appropriate, dress and grooming is highly
overlooked and one of the easiest things to fix.

Add proper social slkills and etiquette and you're hard to beat.

Many people get very far ahead with just this without significant abilities to back them up. Add highly quality abilities and you're doing damn good.

I have taught all of my kids that while they may prefer jeans and sweatshirts they need to understand how to dress for business and formal occasions, as well as how to conduct themselves.

"It's not the tie, we just need to get you a bigger shirt."
