When using an AR15 with Night Vision optics/laser do you guys prefer a helmet/goggle combo, or something that mounts on your gun?

ETA: After putting items together on TNVC, I'll need $5k to buy everything I need which is a PVS-14 gen 3 pinnacle, DBAL I2 IR/Visible green, and a Pro-tec bravo helmet with shroud and rhino mount.

Time to start working Overtime, cause I also need a Glock 17 which will come first.

Haven't shot with one, but it sure is fun to run around the woods at night while drunk with a PVS-14 on a good helmet

Helmet. Having it mounted on your gun adds unnecessary weight. Not to mention, you have to aim at what ever your looking at.

Eta: I do have a tnvc mount on my pvs14  that I can quickly mount on my gun if needed.

What would you recommend first as I am sure I'll get both one day.

I am thinking helmet/goggles.

Short answer is, it depends what you want to do. Mostly static shooting? Dedicated NV scope might be your best bet. But if you're like most of us, you probably want to be able to move around and shoot, and that means helmet mount/ laser on the gun.

I started off using a skateboard helmet with rhino mount and a shielded red laser on the gun. It was less than ideal. Based on info I got in the NV Forum, I eventually upgraded to an Opscore bump helmet with INVG mount and a DBAL-D2 on the gun. Night and day difference (no pun intended).

You probably already know this, but NV gets spendy fast! There are deals to be had in the EE, which is fine for most everything but the optic. With that, you really need to know what you're looking for/ at to be sure you're actually getting a deal.

Night vision is my way of "going green".

ETA: Also, don't drool over RustedAce's gear too much, FEMA pays for most of it!

No you don't. Get a basic helmet set up $100+, and a $3k pvs 14.  IR laser will cost you UP too around 1k. Many options below that.

Start simple, work there slowly.

PVS-14 ~$3000
Rhino mount ~$40-50 on the EE
MICH plate ~$25-50 on the EE
Skateboard helmet ~$50-100

And you have a very workable helmet setup for about $3200. Sure it won't be whiz-bang Navy Seal badass, but it works.

ETA: You can find viable laser setups for around $300 or so. So call it $3500 total.

TNVC and EE are your best bets. But you can get a new/ like new rhino mount on ebay. Just make sure it's not counterfeit.

Well being that it's only around $150 brand new, I bought it for like $50-60 brand new off of  ebay. If they knock on my door, then so be it. I didn't drop $4k on a class 3 laser, so not too worried about the loss.

Damn Now I need to learn how to even use the PVS-14 with helmet.

IT looks like it should be used with the left eye, but then do you close your right eye?

Put it on your head. Look through it. Its pretty hard.

You can use it strong eye or weak eye, depending on what you prefer/ how you intend to use optics with it. I personally use it strong eye because I like to keep one of my eyes adjusted to night, and when I use the thermal I use strong eye.

Keep both eyes open when using.

Another important thing is, dummy cord your NV to the helmet, a store bought tether, 550 cord, doesn't matter, something! That thing is expensive, and if it falls off your noggin and goes smash, you will hate life. Check out Ace's picture a bit up, that black line that runs from the top of his helmet to the NV? Tether.

And I'll see what pictures I can find of the "blue demon" :D

OP, I'm not correcting RA here, just offering my insight. If you have only NV goggles and IR laser, I recommend over non dominant that way if you need to use your optic and white light you can use rifle as normal without your dominant eye having some weird spots, blur whatever in it.

If running as RA does from the FEMABOT(rifle and noggin mounted), then yeah, use dominant but learn to shoot weakside as a just in case.

Either way, it is whatever you are more comfortable with.

With lasers it doesnt matter.

With optics, if you have a non-magnified optic you can use it still either way.

If you have a magnified optic like an ACOG it doesnt work so well looking through the tube, so putting the NVG on non dominant eye works better.

Why the fuck did I mosey into this thread?

I was wondering why I went to cola warrior and then looked at the night vision forum. Now I'm almost $4000 poorer, but at least I have a nice pvs-14 and a decent helmet to show for it.
Did you just buy it right now?

If so I am glad this thread helped you become $4k poorer.

No, I've had my setup for a couple weeks now.  Here's a picture.

Everytime CW happens Vic gets a nice bonus about two weeks later. Can't wait for the next(my first) one. I NEED another laser and a dedicated night scope, thinking thermal.

OP, beware, it is an addiction.

I'm looking for thermal used

If I buy something new imma get the D-740 for the 3x vs 6x and see how it works on the 300 AAC and go laser on 556.

The thermal temptation buuuuuurns.

So your looking at both optics and laser with it on your strong eye with both eyes open.

Sounds simple enough.

thanks

With lasers it doesnt matter.

With optics, you have a non-magnified optic you can use it still either way.

If you have a magnified optic like an ACOG it doesnt work so well, so putting the NVG on non dominant eye works better.
Yep that sounds simple enough.

Crap now I need find a way to get my hands on a helmet/PVS-14 setup before buying it, and then I can go hunt feral hogs.

Here, op, this will solve your night vision problems, and be much cheaper

all kidding aside - buy from tnvc with confidence you'll get great stuff

- print out a copy of the calif. statutes regarding night vision devices and hunting

- to decrease the time you'll be "not detained, only being questioned" be dfg or leo, use the scope without magnification on an helmet, and an ir laser or illuminator on the rifle

there is more wiggle room, but it is easier to argue this case if stopped for illegal sniperscope

edit - there may be some controversy about ir illuminators or ir lasers, but the key word seems to be ir illuminator AND electronic telescope in the penal code. some say don't use any infrared device at all. in that case, a red laser seems to work with some varmits
