I had my first son on 3/11/13. I have been thinking about buying a pistol or rifle for him and giving it to him as a gift when he graduates highschool or college or something. Should I buy it now or wait until that special occasion. What pistol or rifle should I buy?

Buy it now. It will mean more. Use it.

.357 mag / .38 (for when he's younger so he can shoot it.)

Buy it now. Who the hell knows what you will be able to buy in 18 years...

Shoot it with him? Or put in the back of the safe for 18 years?

Get him a youth model 22 rim fire and introduce him to it when you feel he's old enough to shoot it. It will offer years of memories for you both. It can be his " First Gun" And he'll never forget it.

Badass birthday, 3/11 born here.  It's hard to project out what will be a "classic" in 18 years.  I'd buy him a quality .357 or 1911.  Don't worry about breaking the bank.  I'd go for a Ruger SR1911 or S&W 686.  Keep it oiled and don't shoot it.  How awesome would you have felt to get a never-fired 18 year old gun from your dad?

I just want to give him something as a gift from me. I know he will get all of my guns eventually but this one is directly for him from me. His first 22lr and bb gun will be an awesome event as well but an 18 year old new in box gun would be awesome. Just not sure what though. 1911 revolver over/under or rifle. I can't break the bank but a quality american made gun.

I have 80% receivers for 10/22s, AR15s, and 1911s.  I'm going to build them out and eventually pass them to my children.

Colt 6920

I got one for 19 month old and just bought 2013 config (m4 carbine) for my new little guy. He is 4 weeks out.
For OP- do it now if you got the $. I wish in 1985 (when I was born) that my dad would have put away an ak or m16 away for me. Also, you never know what kind of stupid shit the gov will pull.

I say get him a GI 1911, a real one and not one of the "GI style" ones. Yes, they are expensive now but think how expensive they will be when he gets around to wanting one and they wont decrease in value. Then you can get him the training .22 rifle and pistol later on.

Nothing like a gun with built in history and then add your own to it. Trust me, you can't go wrong with one.

With in the next 18years I'm sure I will buy a few dozen more guns. Some for my son and some for me. This one is just important because it'll never be shot and brand new as a gift. I have other guns that will be similar to anything I get him so he familiar with it when he recieves it.
