CLIFF NOTES
*New job, suckered into nights
*5:30pm - 4AM
*7 days a week {yes SEVEN}

So after I logged 60 hours in, I said "F" it and took Lastnight off...
Actually went to bed around 2am and slept about 15 hours

Foreman called a bit ago and said we are taking tonight's shift off
as well....it's about 4pm right now and all I want to do is sleep

Was told by foreman that we have one month to get back of plant running
and It is MANDATORY to pull 10hr/7 days or you WILL be fired.MIGHT
even go to 12 hr shifts

ONLY excuse accepted is that you, your wife or child is dying {He actually said that}

Think I am going to log about 50 hours in this week and tell these asshat's to go fuck themselves.
I am all about getting a job done, but not going to kill myself or make wife/kids suffer
because this Company wants to kill everyone to produce product.

I look at it like this, if you have to go to 2 shifts, 10 hour days 7 days a week....
someone fucked up on the bid and time allowed on this job.

I have never really worked nigh shift, I am 43 and feel the lack of sleep
on my body, I have done SOME eve. shifts but was at home in bed by 2-3 am
I am finding myself having a beer at sunrise, because I can't go straight to bed
from being jacked up on Mnt. dew and energy drinks...
Wife is trippin' because of that....

No one when they get to the end of their life has ever said; "Wow.....I wish I had worked more".

Eject.

Weak rant 3/10

7/12s isn't bad for nights, makes the time go quick.  Pretty standard shift in my industry.  Although we work like hell for an outage, then take some time off

I will have 100-110 hours this past week and 120 the week before. A lot of the guys I work with are 140+ as of recently. What was it you were crying about?

You choose to be there.

Nothing everyone wants to live their life in a way that makes it revolve around working themselves into the ground.  There are plenty of jobs out there that don't require such insane hours.

Enjoy your life..lol

Call me a pussy, but screw that!! 50-60 hours every now in then is nice
as far as a fat check, but for someone that hasn't worked nights
and my 2nd Ind. job.....hell no!

We are running everything in large pipe {Ind. Electrical work}
2-4" Ocal...which is coated rigid, shit is a bitch to install....

Before you give up all that cash, give yourself time to adjust. It will take at least two weeks before your body clock resets. Maybe three or more.

But it will get better. Don't give up yet.

Excuse me, where do you work?

To the OP, I now know never to complain on my 10 hour days 3 times a week in the ER. Best of luck to you and don't get too stressed. Find a way to even work and play.

Sounds like a shutdown. The one thing I noticed over and over was the more hours worked after 8, the less got done. Worked a 16 hr shift at Bethlehem Steel in Maryland around 1988. Productivity after 12 hrs goes wayyy down.....

Worked 33 12 hr shifts at Firestone on a shutdown. Made a ton of money and took a week off.

I'm 58 now, and not sure I could handle that many hours for more than a week.......

However if the money was right, I'd sure try.

I guess I've been in the military too long but I can't say I have much sympathy for civilians who complain about working too much.  I've never understood it.  I've worked 12 to 14 hour shifts for the last 14 years.  Most of that on mid shift.  1800-0600.  During the beginning of the Iraq War I often pulled 15 hour days.  When I was flying with the C-130's those were even longer days, and my missions were done on my days off.  So off shift from patrol or and LP/OP for 12 to 14 hours, come in turn in clean/gear, get notified of flying mission.  Rack out by 1430, up at 2100, check with mission planner, prep flight gear, grab chow, order MRE's or flight meals, brief my other guys on the mission.  Try to grab some sleep until 0430, be at the armory to arm up my team.  Be at mission brief by 0630, out to plane by 0730.  Wheels up 0745, go all over the Arabian peninsula, or Horn of Africa.  Drop cargo and PAX, conduct landing field summaries and back out and home by 1900.  De-brief, turn in and rack out by 2030.  By this time my sleep schedule is screwed beyond belief.  Sometimes back to work by 2300 that night.  I did this kind of schedule for 6 months averaging 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night.

The longest I ever worked was 14 hour shifts for 32 days straight.  When the threat we were after was neutralized I went on another mission like I described above.

All I can say is suck it up and drive through what the company wants, or find new work.

I did similar in the military, it sucked.  To me, it wasn't a lifestyle I wanted to keep doing.. it was an experience that provides me with motivation to get to a point in life where I never have to work myself that much ever again.  Period.

I don't get how anyone wants to live like that.  I can understand it in the military and why guys want to do it.. but I'll never get why guys want to work themselves into the ground just so their employer can make more money.  Life is too short to live like that.

The best part of not being in the military anymore is that I'm free to say "fuck this" and find another job once the hours (or anything) become too unreasonable.

Be careful, both times I went in the hole was on overtime. The first time required a hospital, the second time I was landing decking and stepped on 1" angle bridging, the weld broke and I went head first but managed to grab the lower bridging and swing around like a monkey. It was only one floor but Nelson studs were below me. I lucked out. Had a friend killed in 92 that fell one floor. . He died impaled on a piece of No. 8 rebar. Those plastic caps don't do shit.

Be safe.

Working these hours has given me more respect and understand of the stress you heroes have. I'm probably making about four times what you all do and my ass isn't on the line every day. I don't just mean combat either. You all are under constant scrutiny and fear of fucking up your career if somebody higher in rank decides to fuck up your day. When I say thank you all for doing what you do I mean it.

The other big sacrifice I've encountered just as you have is being away from family and friends for long periods of time.

Thank you

Both of my brothers are Marine veterans, sister was National Guard and lots of friends that have served or are serving.

Here we go with the "I work 110hrs a week you fucking pussy" dick measuring contest....

So I will post this from another thread because it sums up how I feel perfectly....

I like all the tards here that announce how they work a metric shit load of hours as if its some badge of honor.

Good for you, enjoy your time away from your family and friends, enjoy keeping your house in order (not), enjoy being worn the fuck down, ground pounded, stressed, watching your health go to shit, your stress levels through the roof, your kids not knowing their father, your 3rd divorce, and your 1st heart attack.

I'll be working the hours I set.

Suckers.

PS- If you need to work 80hrs a week to make ends meet, you are a fuck up.

That is where I am, 43 yrs old..married and a marriage on the rocks as it is. I am on a personal re-conditioning from a former life I led, I look forward
to one on one time with mentors from my church and now that too has gone to shit.

You want to kill yourself and life on stupid/unhealthy hours to chase a $1...go ahead. I would rather be broke {pay check to pay check} and happy
than making bank and miserable

If I can't get better hours, I will be turning it notice.

Good, your family and your health is far more important than some job.

I think a lot (if not all) of the people who rant about you needing to feel fortunate for just having a job have no marketable skills of their own and live day to day wondering if and when they will be jobless. The fear alone makes them put up with some serious bullshit.

There is nothing wrong with working some long hours as long as there is an end in sight. 10-12 hour days suck, and they suck worse when you have to do it 7 days a week. But stop relying on energy drinks, get on a sleep schedule, and get to it. The pay is good, put it in the bank. Stop relying on alcohol to fix things for you. Yeah, it's rough. Yeah, it's a PITA. Yeah, sometimes people don't like dealing with their spouse being gone the entire time they're awake. But in reality, that's what pays the bills. Eat up the overtime, put it in the bank for later, and let it carry you through the lean times. They pay you well in OT, and then they see you as a reliable employee when they have to downsize because the next job isn't as huge, or as time sensitive. They retain the guys who're willing to put forth the well-compensated effort.

I enjoy my time off just like the next guy, but I also want a retirement that isn't stressful from working a job to make ends meet as a WalMart door greeter. The harder I work now, the less I have to work when I punch out for the last time. I'm 40, and want to retire by the time I turn 60. Living paycheck to paycheck, I can't get that done.

I will have 100-110 hours this past week and 120 the week before. A lot of the guys I work with are 140+ as of recently. What was it you were crying about?

20+ hours a day, every day?  Lol.

There have been a lot of 168 hour weeks (AKA a perfect week) paid out in the last few months.

That is a lot of work but if it is only for a couple months and the pay is right, I say go for it.

Don't blame ya, that's a shit shift to work that many hours...especially if you have family.

Don't listen to the workaholics.  If your employer lied to you and put you on a shift that's ruining your health, family life and general well being just so the bigshots can squeeze out a bit more profit it's time to tell them to fock off and quit.  Unless you're starving or literally dying for the money there's no reason to ruin your life working a job where they don't treat you right.

And any boss stupid enough to not think guys are sleeping on the job deserves the fvcking he'll get when someone dies and a lawyer pulls timesheets to prepare for that once in a lifetime lawsuit. Double woe unto them if they fall afoul of Fed or OSHA rules and a "recordable incident" occurs.
