| Okay So I need to buy a laptop tomorrow and am trying to decide if it worth getting windows 8 or stick with windows 7. I am not getting a touchscreen I don't use a laptop for that if I wanted a touchscreen I would get a tablet. Is windows 8 going to stay around or will it go the way of vista? |

Win7 would be easier to use without touch but Win8 gives you an overall speed increase and a slight lighter OS.
8.1 will give you some cool options to boot to desktop and set the desktop background as the background of the "metro" start screen and that will be available to you upon release. Im telling you those 3 things right there make for a much more seamless experience, should have done that from jump street and slowly worked us into the start screen as the primary platform. |

Glad they finally figured out their mistake and decided to change course with 8.1 Quoted:
The only time Windows 8 makes sense on a computer is if it's touchscreen. Get Windows 7. As I said above, in terms of optimization, speed and memory usage on a modern rig, 8 is superior to 7. 7 is superior to 8 in terms of desktop and business aesthetics. This was a HUGE mistake on MS's part and will likely be corrected with 8.1 in October. |

Thanks for the advice esp. the more detailed ones!! It looks like 8.1 won't be much longer. I try to run my computers for as long as I can. Laptops cost about the same with 8 vs 7 but I don't want to have to spend the money to upgrade in a year might as well do it now. |
