Okay So I need to buy a laptop tomorrow and am trying to decide if it worth getting windows 8 or stick with windows 7. I am not getting a touchscreen I don't use a laptop for that if I wanted a touchscreen I would get a tablet. Is windows 8 going to stay around or will it go the way of vista?

It works as long as you like Metro and the ugly look of the UI. Classic Shell can remove Metro and restore a Win 7 like UI that looks ugly, but it is usable. It has issues coming on at start up though it is not common. The only bad part about 8 is the UI.

Windows 8 with classic shell until 8.1 goes live.  8 is the better operating system.

Run Windows 7 until Win 9 SP 1 comes out.

See the button between your left ctr and alt keys. If you can press it, you will be fine with windows 8

The only time Windows 8 makes sense on a computer is if it's touchscreen.

Get Windows 7.

Win7 would be easier to use without touch but Win8 gives you an overall speed increase and a slight lighter OS.

8.1 will give you some cool options to boot to desktop and set the desktop background as the background of the "metro" start screen and that will be available to you upon release.
Im telling you those 3 things right there make for a much more seamless experience, should have done that from jump street and slowly worked us into the start screen as the primary platform.

8 is a more streamlined operating system, however MS was stupid to force a basically touch-screen centric OS on people who primarily use non-touch-screen interfaces. Glad they finally figured out their mistake and decided to change course with 8.1

As I said above, in terms of optimization, speed and memory usage on a modern rig, 8 is superior to 7.

7 is superior to 8 in terms of desktop and business aesthetics. This was a HUGE mistake on MS's part and will likely be corrected with 8.1 in October.

There is nothing wrong with W7, so there is no need for W8.
There is no reason why you should jump to a new OS every time Microsoft tries to force you into something that nobody wants.

Thanks for the advice esp. the more detailed ones!!
It looks like 8.1 won't be much longer. I try to run my computers for as long as I can. Laptops cost about the same with 8 vs 7 but I don't want to have to spend the money to upgrade in a year might as well do it now.

Yea with classic shell on the free or stardocks start8 and modernmix(lets you run metro apps in windows) and windows 8 isn't that bad on a non-touch screen.

I'd prob get a windows 8 pro setup at this point.

I usually only upgrade the OS when I get new hardware.  If I were buying a new computer I would just get what ever is the latest.
