For some reason, the parking garage where this picture was taken likes to attract big, interesting moths and song birds of all sorts.

Now I gotta know what was posted and edited out.

As to the OP, I've never seen a moth like that before, but it's very cool looking.

I was thinking that or it fell asleep on a ReelTree APG HD pattern before it got there.

Think I saw a movie once where that moth fought Godzilla in downtown Tokyo

With that in mind, I'd be nice to it.

ETA: It's coloring is beautiful.

There are a number of moths referred to as "sphinx moths."

What is a brown luna moth?  I've only seen green ones.

The brown lunas I saw were like this one.

I saw a green luna that got trapped in my garage one time.   I was able to shoo him out of there.   Didn't want to kill it.

I don't think that's a luna.  It is marked differently, but shaped like a cecropia.

That's a Polyphemus.   Different critter from a Luna (although they are both silk moths).

That's it.

It looks like they appear in other colors as well.   Brown seems to be predominant, but I found this one on the net.

So I checked Wiki about the moth in the in the OP (they identify it as the Oleander Hawk-moth or Army Green Moth, Daphnis nerii (formerly Deilephila nerii)).

What is interesting is that its normal range is Africa, India and Europe.

Blue is summer habitat, green is winter habitat.

I wonder if I should be calling an entomology dept. somewhere.  It's still sitting at the same place this morning.

That's the way the one I saw in the OP is supposed fly.  It's part of the Sphinx moth family that have developed the hovering ability like hummingbirds in order to feed on nectar.
