The output shaft seal on my steering gear box went out two weeks ago. Replaced it with a remanned unit today and it feels like I don't have power steering.

I bled the system and it felt good for about 10 minutes on the test drive. I drove up to a high school parking lot so I could crank the wheel left and right and work out all the air. Then suddenly no power steering.

I've bled it a couple more times with no improvement. Fluid looks good and clear and not bubbly.

Pump is about 8 months old, lines are new too.

At wits end here. Any ideas?

Can you see fluid flowing around in the res?    I've seen PS pump shafts snap clean in half.

Yep. Also took the return hose off to flush, it's definitely moving fluid.

Something with the rack is busted or still air in the system trapped down low in the rack.

Not rack and pinion.

If I was fixing it in the shop I'd get a gauge on the line to check the pumps output pressure, kinda hard to do in the driveway without the right tools and fittings.

That said I have seen a unique case where the suction line had a small leak that actually pulled air into the line.    Make sure the fluid is not foaming and it is full.

Jack up the front and turn the wheel many many times engine off.

Failing that I'd say its pump or gearbox,

Definitely not foaming.

Here's the procedure I used:

Put everything back together, truck up on stands.

Filled reservoir, cranked wheel left and right several times with engine off

Topped off again, started her up, still on stands, repeat cranking of wheel

Took it down off the stands, topped off again, went on a short test drive, all was good for about 15 minutes, I was in a parking lot doing figure 8s when it just quit.

I got it home, tried to bleed it some more, even took the return line off the pump and bled some fluid that way, still nothing.

Yank the belt off and see if it broke the P/S shaft.

They are a common problem.Any whining/noise when you turn?

Well I think I fixed it. Took the power steering pump out and pulled it apart, full of metal filings.

Took back to the parts store, swapped out under warranty. New pump is in and all seems right.

Thanks for the advice.
