Ok, so I have a mac based (music) studio, and with the increase in work--business is good right now--I need to start hosting my sample libraries on external hard drives. My HD is having a hard time pulling from several different sample libraries at the same time if I have too many instances their engines running.
I just bought a Seagate 2 TB with USB 3.0 and optional thunderbolt upgrade--as it is I'm just running it with USB 3.0. The crazy thing is that it reads and writes almost 2x as fast as my internal hard drive. So my question is, will I be able to run more instances of my sample library engines by migrating all of them to my external HD? I know that, according to the test, it reads and writes faster but does this directly translate to more sample libraries being able to be pulled from at the same time? Also, will my external HD actually write faster than my internal HD when I'm recording live audio? Also, ram is not an issue; I've got 16GB, and have never used more than 12 on a given project. Right now, my limiting factor is my HD. |

Probably, but you will have to test it to find out for sure... Consider upgrading your internal HD to a flash drive. SSD, not flash... Toh-may-toe Toh-mah-toe In any case, he's right, switching over to SSD drives will show you ridiculous increase in speed. |
