I plan on paying blue collar professionals to take my son for a summer. plumbing, electrical, carpentry, automotive. One summer each thru High School. His choice on graduation, goto college with our support, OR enter an apprenticeship; with 40-60k in the bank upon finishing that apprenticeship, or what we would be putting up towards college. If he chooses the military and gets the GI bill (if it's still around) he will get that money upon graduation from school but not before his ETS from atleast a 6yr contract in one of the combat arms. 10k bonus from us for each paygrade between E5-up or O2-up. If he goes the college route and we pay the difference between student loans, it will only be applicable to degrees in Science, Law, Medicine, Engineering, History, etc etc. No fucking underwater basket weaving, unless he wants to support that tomfoolery himself. I will sign a contract with him to this affect when he enters high school and have it ratified when he enters the age of majority. I have a godson (he's a toddler now) but I will probably offer the same setup. I am only paying it forward from one of my father's friends that did something similar for me. |

I have a nephew that just graduated high school, and I keep harping on this subject every time I see him. I've been pushing engineering, since it's also within his hobby interests and he's been working at a machine shop part time. Assuming he is worth a fuck, the time he spends working at the machine shop is already adding to his value no matter what direction he heads into. If he goes into engineering he'll have his machine shop time to add to his knowledge. When I learned to frame after I got out of the service, I automatically knew how to sheetrock, form concrete, roof and do finish carpentry because I knew how to use a square and a level. The difference between framing and finishing is how sharp your pencil is. |
