The man had his faults, but he was an actual Southern Baptist preacher. I have no doubt he led many to Christ.
Stole speeches from others, sure. Not good. But at his core I don't believe he was a racist. Hell, just look how often his stuff is quoted even here on arfcom. His followers and hangers on had another agenda going though. Bottom line is that Jackson, Young, et al. , were and are no MLK. He had a dream, they have revenge in their hearts. And we've all seen how that's gone. |

IIRC, the black Baptist preachers of the mid twentieth century and before used a basic lexicon of established sermons, that they all used periodically. The sermons were shared, published, studied and discussed at conferences. If you grew up in those churches (his father was a minister too, wasn't he?) you know those sermons, you knew those themes. You studied them in seminary. You preached them from the pulpit. You weren't stealing speeches, you were speaking from a common shared pool of thems and topics, that the audience understood. I think today we would call something like that a meme. |

Haven't spent much time in a 1950s Southern Baptist Church, have you? Being who he was and when, he was most likely loud, passionate, emotional, dramatic, thunderous, whispering, sweated a lot, could coax the last dollar out of a miser, preach a funeral like the deceased was a saint, and could pray the paint off the wall. Counting the normal sinners wanting to change their ways and the rededications probably had thousands heading down the aisle. And believe me, ANY Southern baptist preacher will be very adept in delivering the basic plan of salvation. He will be able to describe hell forty different ways and determine by look that you aren't saved and on the way to eternal damnation. Can also sing every verse of "Just As I Am" and "Amazing Grace" better than a Sturm Abteilung partei member could "Horst Wessel" . And love to eat fried chicken. |
