Is this what is referred to as "rat shot"?
Is it effective on snakes, not including Boas and big mofos like that? Will it scratch up the inside of the barrel? Rifle or pistol? Sorry for all the questions, but the LGS where I buy and transfer my guns had some on the shelf and let me have them cheap, so I scarfed some up. Down here, I have encountered various critters out in the woods/swamp so I am considering carrying something loaded with them. |

Is this what is referred to as "rat shot"? Yes. Also sometimes called "Dust". Uses #12 shot. Is it effective on snakes, not including Boas and big mofos like that? Yes, if you are very close. Will it scratch up the inside of the barrel?
Rifle or pistol? No. The shot is lead. Barrels are steel. It will not do any damage. |
| I have never used them for snakes, or any other critter, but I have used a couple of boxes shooting tin cans and other plinking targets. Suffice it to say they are not very powerful. They'll pierce both sides of an aluminum soda can from 3 or 4 feet. At ten feet away, if the pattern actually connects with the can, you'll get a few of the microscopic shot pellets through one side. In short, if you're within a couple of feet of a small snake or mouse, you can dispatch it. I suggest that you purchase a box and within a couple of rounds you'll know all there is to know about the .22 shot shells. |

Gotta be REAL close for it to be effective. Like too close for comfort when it comes to rattlesnakes. .38 Special shotshells work better, but not by much. If I can see them, I am going the other way. I guess it would be pretty close if I had to use them. |
| I had about 200 rounds of it as a kid that I burned off. It worked o.k. on (already poisoned, sluggish and inattentive) rats in the duck-shed. As long as I was almost touching them with the muzzle (Norwegian rats are DAMN big!) it would kill them. Used them on pest grackles and cowbirds in the feeders too, but you have to be really close, and it's the exception, rather than the rule to get a clean kill on the shot. |

Its not very good in my experience. Close range like 10 feet is where its best. A pump pellet gun works as good if not better. It was pricey too. This would be unexpected encounters 'cause I ain't goin' lookin' for 'em. I hear ya. It's just not many bbs and its low velocity. If i had to shoot something to keep it from biting me it would be a last resort. Never hurt my barrels that im aware of. Tried it on all kinds of critters as a kid. I found it was pretty worthless when it came to killing shit. |

Tiny tiny shot with low pellet energy (and not many pellets) with the added bonus of crappy patterns out of rifled barrels.
It will not hurt the gun but might not get decent feeding in certain actions and may not operate semi guns. Old style has a longer than usual brass case with the end crimped . Other style by CCI has a tiny plastic shot capsule loaded in place of the bullet CCI also makes shot loads for 38/357/44/45?. At one point Remington made some 45acp crimped shot loads .These loads have more and larger shot than the rimfire but still throw pretty lousy patterns. Try some different guns/calibers/distances . To me a revolver seemed to throw patterns just as good or better than rifles. If you need something to count on close up find a .410 shotgun or a Judge. A .410 is the mouse gun of the shotgun world but is quite a cannon compared to the rat shot loads |

The CCI 22LR shsotshells are a lot more effective than the crimped "rat shot"
I have killed several large rattlers, some as large as 54",and around 2.5 inches around, with 22LR CCI shotshells in a S&W Mod 34 2" revolver. PS, rattle snakes are very good to eat, floured and fried in olive oil... |

Long or short barrel or no difference? |

Last week I killed a water mocassin on my patio with some .22 ratshot. About a 2.5 footer. I smelled the damn thing about the same time I saw him. Nasty mutherfuckers.
I always keep a few boxes handy (the Winchester crimped shot, not the CCI with the plastic bubble on the end). Damn snake was curled up next to the fireplace, I saw him immediately when I walked out the door. The pistol was nearby, I didn't want to wait to get to a .410 in the safe. I shot a whole ten round mag of the shells at him from my Ruger Mark II, probably no more than 6 feet away. It eventually did the job. LC ETA: the shotshells will not cycle in either my 10/22 or my Mark II. Never had problems with them in my Savage Mark II, but then, that's a bolt action. |

| I use the CCI shot shell for 22lr a lot for rattlesnakes, rats, and mice. It kills. I shoot it out of a revolver and out of a Ruger 10/22. It does not cycle the 10/22 action, but it is real easy to action a round quickly. I also use CCI shot shell in 9mm from a glock. Very effective and it cycles the action. |

Long or short barrel or no difference? They REALLY work best in something like a S&W 617, or a Colt Diamondback. I prefer the 4-inch barrel. (seriously)

Good on snakes as long as they are not further than eight feet away. Never wait to see how the first one worked, shoot twice or thrice. Never use it in a rifle or pistol that requires you to chamber each round by hand. It wont function in semiautos. I'd only use it in a revolver. Wont hurt the barrel either, atleast not in my guns. .38 shot shells are much better. |

No. I've never even had them cycle the action on a rifle that functioned with CB Shorts(early Winchester 190/290 and Remington 550-1). Manual actions only, or hand cycle your semiauto. |

Never tried them but I wouldn't mind a box to play with.
Get some ping pong balls and try hitting them with the muzzle 1 foot, 2 feet, 3 feet away and see what you think. I wonder what the ricochet chances are if the shooter isn't wearing eyepro? Even a tiny shot in the eye is not a good thing.... |

....Lots of fun with a box of those sitting on the porch shooting carpenter bees as they are hovering below the wood I don't want them boring into Just remembered I have done this also. |

I prefer the 4-inch barrel. (seriously)
