Until about a week ago we were running a Motorola surfboard modem to a desktop computer and using a wireless router to connect the two laptops in our other devices in our house.  We started getting a message that the connection cannot renew the IP address.  The strange thing is that by bypassing the wireless router And plugging the ethernet cable directly in we can get a connection on one of our laptops but not the desktop or the other laptop. We still get a strong Wi-Fi signal but no connection to the Internet when we have the router in use. Our provider is Comcast and they have been absolutely useless in solving this problem. Any thoughts on where to begin? Presume I know nothing about computers because I barely do. Thanks so much for any input!

Is the modem a router modem combo?

First thing to do is to unplug everything and leave it unplugged for about 15 minutes or so. Plug back in and see if it is fixed.

Thanks for the input. We tried modem resets, unplugging, etc. will try again. Comcast said Something may have changed in their configurations but they could not tell me what that may be.
