A few weeks back I had a nice chat with a guy that works for McLaren. His job is to do the pre-delivery work on new cars coming into the US. He works in a nondescript warehouse and his job is to take the cars as they come off the boat and get them ready for delivery to the dealerships and eventually the customer. This includes everything from taking to protective film off the body panels and interior to test driving, some small repairs and software updates.
Sometimes large parts shipments come though his shop en route to a dealership. There are also a lot of cars that are heading back to the factory for refurbishing that he has to prep for shipment. Apparently its not uncommon for a customer to either buy a used McLaren and then ship it back to the factory to have the paint and interior updated to the their own tastes. A couple times customers have even bought new ones right off the show room floor and then send them right back for new paint, seats etc. He said sometimes its actually quicker (also more $$$) to get the car you want rather than wait for your special order car to arrive. So that got me thinking. This guy probably has one of the most interesting jobs I think I've ever seen. Keep in mind its from the outside looking in so for all I know the day to day aspects of the job could be pretty boring. I know interesting is a subjective term and there are certainly jobs out there that are more dangerous, difficult, demanding, rare, etc. But for some reason this one kind of stands out to me. So what other cool/interesting jobs does ARFCOM have or know about? |

I know two guys who basically do that for Mercedes Benz down in the Port of Baltimore. If you live on the East Coast and have some sort of dealer option installed on your Benz like supplemental cabin lighting then there's a pretty good chance that they personally put it in. Me? I'm a camera operator and also a video engineer. It's a pretty cool job. Here's a clip from the MX race I engineered this past weekend. 22 cameras and non-stop all day. The second heat was carried by NBC. If you watched that then you saw me working. Dude thats pretty damn cool. I'm an apprentice substation electrician not all that interesting. |

The MB facility can be seen from I-95 and is vast. Yep, I've been on the port twice in the past two years. Its a pretty cool place, a bitch to get into and you have to have an escort with you at all times but still pretty neat to see. |
