Here's my 45-70 Marlin next to my Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull.

I think this is my top SHTF rifle due to it's weight to power ratio.

I have had a few 45-70s but kept one all these years.  It is this model, the 1895 LTD II
I lengthened the loading gate, polished the action and replaced the plastic bullet guide with a steel one and replaced the CBS with a false screw.

No gun porn of 45/70s for me to post, but I have an 1895 that was made not long before the marlin plant was shuddered, with ghost ring sights on it.  Picked up an 1895GS earlier this year, and have some 405gr lead loads for it, but haven't gone out to the range with her yet.

Besides the stainless guide gun wearing Brockman's lumber ...

I also have a Marlin LTD IV
This one isn't mine, but just like it, 24 inch octagon barrel

And a 1975 model 1895 that I have owned for 20 years or so.

Plus a few other leverguns

And an early Shiloh/C. Sharps Arms (Big Timber Montana) 45-70 (seller's pics)

I've whacked a few critters with the 45-70

And my coolest (possibly rarest) Marlin, a 1973 Model 39M octagon (22LR understudy to the 45-70)

Years ago, when PR361 was young and dumb, (I'm  longer young), My best friend got his hands on a 45-70 barrel for his TC Contender. Ported, so it had very little muzzle flip,
driving the recoil straight back into your hand.

We shot it once each.

I've got a ported .45-70 barrel for my Contender.  I've also got a BFR, in addition to the Century (not CAI) in the photo.
I'm far, far more eager to shoot a box of factory 300gr JHPs out of either of my .45-70 revolvers than half a box from the Contender.  I think the cylinder gap makes a big difference in the performance/felt recoil and that whole straight back into your hand thing the Contender's got going for it doesn't do any favors.  The plowhandle SA grip does it's thing pretty well, too.

Absolutely.... I'd say about 30%.

Shooting my "utility load" which is a 350gr. plated at 1,400fps feels like shooting a .45LC plinker.

A gunsmith named Steve Barlow out of Salt Lake City made it.  In fact, he went over this stick top to bottom and did one HELL of a job on it.  It's like a different rifle now.

Sorry it took a few days, but I needed to either find time to go to the range and take photos in sunlight or break out the shop lights for indoor photos.  Made myself do the latter last night.  Even then, I didn't notice that I had the camera set up to date stamp the photos, much less that it was set up w. the wrong date.  Might as well face it, I'm a shlub when it comes to photography and I doubt I'll change at this late date.

Anyhoo...  Here's the set of .45-70 handguns:

From top to bottom, Contender, BFR and Century.  Or single shot, 5-shooter, sixgun.  Just for an idea of scale, the BFR has a 10.5" barrel.

Here's some more stuff that hasn't been all over this thread yet:

From the top down: M1884 Trapdoor Springfield, Remington Keene, 3rd Model Winchester Hotchkiss and Remington Lee.
Figuring that anyway 4 generations of Bubbas have all made full use of the opportunity to screw these up, which explains things like the wood grafts on the Remington Lee's stock to give it a sporter-type pistol grip and high comb and the forend cut off at the first band on the Remington Keene, not to mention taking off a lot of the comb until it looks like a jezzail's buttstock.  The Winchester Hotchkiss has the least objectionable-looking work on it, which looks to've been done quite a long time ago and the Trapdoor "only" has wooden plugs in the tang to fill the holes where someone stuck a tang sight on w. wood screws.
However, it's all the junk that's been done to them that made it so that I could afford these examples of the "also-rans" against the issue arm back in the day...

Yep.  Going by memory, but the Speer book had 3 levels of load data for 45-70:  the lowest for Rolling Block and Trap-Door guns, a mid-level for leverguns and revolvers, and the absolute highest for guns like the Ruger No. 1 single shot (it has a massive action) and certain very stout bolt actions.
