I figure that's its smarter to make SAPI plates for an Interceptor vest, than to buy them for $750.

How hard is it to get a piece of steel?

Depends on where you live.  In California, steel must be registered.

SAPI plates are too light to be made of steel and if they were they wouldn't be made of just any steel. A piece of steel as large and as thick as a SAPI plate would be a bitch to wear. Two would be a  real pain.

I just did a Google search for SAPI plates and damn if it didn't bring up the AR15 Equipment Exchange. Yeah, I know, so what....

btw, SAPI plates aren't made out of steel...[:(]

... Try contacting a company in Tempe,AZ called Simula.
They make various shapes of silicon carbide for defeating small arms fire for several military aircaft.
Not sure if they'd sell to a private individual though.
