So my Toshiba Thrive has bit the dust, the screen has cracked and is not good to use anymore, is a factory restore sufficient to remove personal info?

Or just a snarky attitude and the willingness (and intent) to piss people off??

If you do the "reset tablet" from the Settings --> Privacy --> Factory data reset screen then yes it should erase all personal data from the device and return it to a factory state.

If you want to dispose of it and don't want to use it for target practice, you can try unloading it on ebay/craigslist or similar site, or contact your town and see if they have an electronics disposal/dump/collection station location.

Take it apart.  I honestly don't know what they use for a hard drive but I figure you should wind up with pieces of something you wish to keep similar to dismantling a hard drive and keeping the magnets while destroying the platters.

There is a big thread in gd about computers and several posts about pulling more info off a hard drive than that hard drive should physically hold.  Thing is, now they can check various layers and overwrites and what not.

I still have my droid I broke, it no longer has service and I went with another carrier.  I am going to make it an expensive mp3 music player I guess, and if that fails then the phone will be dismantled and certain parts destroyed.

These days I do make sure the batteries get turned in somewhere, or perhaps sold if there is a market for them.

With your tablet I figure the charger and battery should be worth something to someone.

But no way do I turn anything in anymore.

If it was a PC, odds are that you can remove the hard drive by taking out two to four screws.

So remove the hard drive,  take the drive out of its carrier, put the carrier back into the computer,

and sell the computer on ebay "as is" and get some money out of it.

Throw the drive in the bottom of a desk drawer and forget it exists.

But on a tablet,  it's probably storing everything in non-volatile memory.

It becomes much tougher now.

I used Tannerite to dispose of an old laptop.  Worked great, but picking up all the pieces was a pain.
