I don't have time to look at all of the posts today.  Is the AK-74 a .223 or a .308?

I know about the AK-47, and I beleive the AK-94 is a 5mm.  But, for my curiosity concerning the news media and the sniper, I'd like to know if the AK-74 is a .223...

thanks for the help!

Hey, Jesterdog!

There's a good article about this caliber in a Shotgun News from some time in September, 2002. I don't recall the exact issue, but the gist of the article was that the caliber shows signs of becoming popular in the U.S. It will be marketed as a .221 caliber.

From what I remember, this caliber is comparable to our .223 in many ways. It differs greatly in its stability, though, due to its greater length vs. weight ratio. Yes, this causes the bullet to "upset" when it enters flesh.

Darn those Soviets, anyway.

AK 74 is 5.45mm
AR/223 is 5.56mm
Not a good pic but it does tell a lot. Can you SEE the difference? There isnt much.
The overall length of both cartridges is the same. The bullet diameter is essentially the same: .22
The cartridges themselvse ARE different. One is 39mm and one is 45mm long. The bullets are also different. While essentially the same diameter, the russian bullet is 6mm longer. This makes the overall length the same.
