My coworker saw this in a barn on the way to work so we stopped in on our lunch. Interesting guy runs it. He is one of 8 or so legal stills in Ohio. By his estimate he guessed 180 illegal ones exist. He has a "gentlemans moonshine" called whiskey dick for $25 and sells his Homicide brand whiskey for $95 for a flask sized bottle. (Sorry don't know my booze bottle sizes). He also makes an applejack shine

He ages the whiskey for 4 years in locally sourced oak barrels. He has to tape the barrels with tape from the ATF and sit on it until its done. It is then sold to the state who then sells it back to him. When sold, he gives half of the money to the Feds. So he gets $12.50 out of a $25 bottle.

Interesting find. I'm looking forward to the ARFCOM comments about their local distillers.

Maybe 180 illegal stills in his area, but east of Cleveland and the southern part of the state I'm sure the is 180 within some countys .

I may of tried some the was just like taking a sip of ice water, and may of fallen flat on my ass after trying to stand up from said sip.

Up until this afternoon I knew absolutely nothing about private distillers.

I dug the fact that the barrels were all made from local trees by a local barrel maker and all of the ingredients were from Sandusky county. The only thing not local was the yeast. He buys that from a supplier in Sweden

Sounds like some entrepreneur could make a mint reproducing that red ATF tape.

of course those are only for the production of Ethanol for which you can get a permit issued by the Feds. Because discussing anything else might get this thread locked and so far it seems very interesting.
