Jeep's website says 285 HP:
Powertrain. The 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine delivers 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque with fuel efficiency up to 21 miles per gallon+. On-road presence is outstanding. The Toyota has IFS, which limits suspension travel, weakens the front driveline, and has many more parts to wear or break than the old-school solid axle in a Jeep. |

Manual 4wd? As in non actuated t case or what? Very few failures with the electric ones now days. Anyway. Chevy, ford dodge. As in, actually engaging a lever. not push button. I hate car functions that use electronics, Like, Fly by wire controls on the gas and brake pedal, turn knob AWD, touch screen AC control. paddel shifters that are only changing the gears by computer. |

Quoted: Unless you're in the business of throwing mud, horsepower is not that critical in an off road application. Traction and gearing is everything. I'd take a 4-cyl w/rear LSD or locker vs. 6-cyl and an open rear end every time. Hell, half the time I'd take 2WD w/LSD over 4WD w/open rear. |

Brakes are generally kept as a pair of separate hydraulic circuits to be failsafe. |

Drive-by-wire, DbW, by-wire, or x-by-wire technology in the automotive industry replaces the traditional mechanical control systems with electronic control systems using electromechanical actuators and human-machine interfaces such as pedal and steering feel emulators. Hence, the traditional components such as the steering column, intermediate shafts, pumps, hoses, belts, coolers and vacuum servos and master cylinders are eliminated from the vehicle. Examples include electronic throttle control and brake-by-wire.

Have you test drove a new Wrangler/Rubicon? There is a lot more get up and go in them with the new engine. is there a difference in engine packages from the sport and rubicon? or are all the trims strictly interior leather and gagdets? The Rubicon comes with lower gearing so it feels like more get out of the hole. It also comes with a bunch of off-road improvements. ETA: The interiors are all the same. You should really test drive a Rubi to see what I mean. It has a better transfer case(manual), gets good mpg's, better tires, 4 wheel discs, air lockers, skid plates, stronger axles, disco sway bar for better articulation. Its all around the best you can get. |

Are you sure that isn't a lever actuated electronic controlled transfer case vs a push button controlled one? For $30k I got a brand new 2011 Dodge 1500 quad cab Outdoorsman edition. All terrain tires, skid plates. limited slip rear diff, etc. Too much hp for you though (390) and lots of nice electronics. Perhaps try finding an old beat down junker then. |

Quoted: You can get a Wrangler X, which is basically 4x4, a/c, cruise, and thats it. No p/w, no p/l, no nav, no leath. What is current a factory 4x4, that has around 300HP, Auto transmission, Manual 4wheel drive, preferable suspension and kid plates plus or minus $30Kish? Off the top of my head i can think of Jeep with their newish 3.6 Pentastar 305HP v6's. but what about the low end models? I don't want to buy leather and navigation system. I want to say Toyota, but their 4.0's are no where near 300HP. What about Nissan Xterra? whats the story on those? |

Friend at work just got a big horn edition for the same price with rebates last year (his retailed 37k and change also). Wait until August or September and Dodge/Ram starts giving the damn things away. |
| Just pick up a few year old Land Cruiser imho. About the best 4x4 and all around vehicle you can get, lots of room, and as off road capable off the lot as any. I have a 96 as an off road vehicle and may go a a mid 2000s as a daily driver I can also take off-roading. It won't have 300hp but as stated earlier, not needed. |

ETA: Jeep Rubicon (2-door only, unless you have sex with men) or FJ Cruiser are your only good non-Euro, non-pickup options for 4x4 vehicles on the market today. |

I think the point is that 4wd actuators haven't really been problematic since the late 80s and early 90s. While it may be a preference, it may also be a pointless thing to strive for. I would find the truck you want and buy it. If you want heavy duty a ford f250 is the ticket. If you want an extremely reliable full size then look chevy. If you want a weekend wheeler, then look at jeep or any of the other smaller foreign pick ups. |
