Recently the city of St. Charles Illinois ran a gun buyback using tax money to buy unwanted guns from it citizens. Typically the police will take any gun, even illegal firearms, without any questions asked in exchange for a gift card or some other financial trinket. The presumption by those in the community, and by those selling their firearms for pennies on the dollar, is that the firearms will be destroyed and forever removed from their community.
So what happens when the police in St. Charles run a buyback and then take 20 or so of the guns they bought and sell them for a profit to local licensed firearms dealers to be resold to the public? Most gun owners and pro-2nd Amendment folks would cheer and say, “GREAT GOING!” Hey, after all the guns weren’t destroyed and perhaps a few collectables were spared so they could live on in the hands of a future collector. Not me, I say “foul!” Full article: http://www.thebangswitch.com/profiting-from-gun-buybacks/ |

Sounds like a better option than the alternative where they destroy them. If they destroy them, someone complains. If they resell them to collectors who will appreciate them, someone complains. I get it, we hate the Po around these parts, but maybe we let this one slide because it beats having the guns destroyed if you ask me.
And yes, tax dollars should not be used to "buy back" illegal and unwantes guns; that's like the gov't using tax dollars to "buy back" illegal drugs. But look on the bright side, the guns are off the street and now they're available for you and me to buy. |

I'm torn. I hate the idea of good, collectable guns being destroyed because of these stupid programs, and I'm OK with the cops buying an AR-15 or some Browning Shotgun for
a $50 gift certificate, because any goober that would do that was too stupid to be in possesion of it in the first place. I don't want to see them destroyed. But I agree that the Coppers should not be above the law, and they are obviously in violation of Federal Firearms law , buying and selling guns for profit, and not for personal use. I think they should allow law abiding citizens to take possesion of them for the $50 they have in them. Lottery for picking order. Non-profit public service, remove the guns from the hands of the stupid, place them in good homes. |

Need more police like this: Link
The unnamed owner of the gun has left the valuable artifact at the police station for safe keeping. "We did not take the gun in for the gun buy-back program," Crabtree said. "If we took it as part of the buy-back, we would have no choice but to destroy the gun. We don't want to destroy that gun." The owner intends to sell the Sturmgewehr 44. |

It just proves the whole thing is bullshit. At least they're not being destroyed. It gives people a way to get rid of unwanted guns and eliminates the problem of disposing of illegal guns. Better than having they laying around waiting to be stolen and if they sell them then collectors items aren't destroyed. |
