what am I missing here?

if FN produced a modern day FAL...

how many would buy it?

I'd buy one if it cost less than $100. But I'm broke.

It'd certainly be something I'd be interested in if/when I have money again.

ETA: Whatever you're missing I seem to be missing as well.

I am assuming that it is a sore subject some how?

Yes. I love mine. Easy to maintain, reliable in any conditions, lean and balanced for a .308. Also, excellent ergonomics as opposed to the sadistic design of the HK G3. I'm sure there's some 21st century improvements that can be made.

Just curious how many FN employees have knowledge of the FAL.

They probably could not produce an FAL at a price point that people would buy anyway.

Nope. I'm poor. $100 is about all I could afford. Probably more like $10 and some change.

But yeah, if and when I have money again, I'd be perfectly happy to part with a grand or so to get a real FN FAL.

Palmetto State Armory is nearby, you should swing by just to say you've been there.
I'd also ask the FN guys where to get some good Carolina style BBQ.

That's like comparing a Glock to a 1911.

Picked up one in a store. Plastic plastic plastic plastic and I did not like the trigger at all.

The -17 is worlds better than the FAL. The trigger is not much different in design from an FNC.

I think DSA does a fine job of that.

Now, if FN wants to make a new FNC....

IIRC, they aren't. They're switching the production line over to make PS90s. Then when that's done they'll go back to FS2000s. I guess the same production line makes both.

Not my style, then. It looks like a plastic fish to me, I didn't like the trigger, or anything about it.

I've got two FALs, one is a G1 on Imbel, the other is an STG-58 on DSA. I wouldn't trade either for that.

My dream is to visit the FN plant in Herstal, Belgium, someday.  Lots of history there.  I have 6 FN model 1922 pistols made there during the German occupation of the plant (WW2) and a model 1910 made just before the occupation that went to Japan and was marked by the Japanese for military use.  The plant also was rocket attacked with V1 and V2 rockets after the Germans left the plant in late 1944.  In addition, right after the end of the war the plant rebuilt and packaged up thousands of M1 rifles for the US.
