In Orwell's "1984," Newspeak came to mean that the word being used meant its opposite.
The Ministry of Peace dealt with war. The Ministry of Plenty dealt with shortages and famine. The Ministry of Truth (the government's official "news" agency) dealt with lies and deceit. What new "Newspeak" terms have you seen come into being lately? "reality TV" portrays unreal, contrived situations. |

Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words.
Doublethink is the act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct, often in distinct social contexts. Reid: "taxation is voluntary". Its not compulsory, its required. |
