I have been out of work for 6 months and have not gotten any interviews and I think it's my resume that's fucking me. Long story short I worked for the Dept of Education up in NY before I moved to FL 8 years ago,and the job titles they have for the City of NY are way different then anywhere else in the country. My last job in NYC was titled Custodian Engineer and the job before my promotion was Fireman Engineer. As a Custodian Engineer you are the Building Manager I had my own office and if you had the money in your budget you could hire a secretary (I didn't),it's a suit and tie job making 6 figures after your there a while and was 70,000 to start. As the Fireman Engineer you were the Building Chief Engineer answering directly to the Custodian Engineer about all the building systems and also the supervisor for the working crew. So my question is ,I have been using the Custodian and Fireman titles down here and everybody thinks your a floor moper. Is there a problem using a different title then is used up in NY ? Will it be frowned upon buy a potential employer when they do a check of my work history? And just for the record I had been working for a pretty large commercial HVAC company here in FL until they lost the contract I was on and they laid me off. And I really don't want to do AC any more in this FL heat. So you guys that do the hiring would this be a problem? Not trying to deceive anybody but I think I'm shortchanging myself sticking to the original job titles. Opinions ? |
| I would try changing some verbage and make 2 or 3 different ones. A resume might look great to somebody and hire you and then a different set of eye may not like it. I am going through the same thing right now for some different federal agencies. If it hasn't been working thus far than give it a few adjustments and see how it goes. It is not like you are lying |

As a website developer/website designer/website administrator with no actual title beyond "Graphics" written anywhere in my employment paperwork, I would go with whatever makes the most sense.
If you are worried about using a title that isn't the actual title given, I would use some parentheses. Actual Title (What that title actually is) Something like this... Employment History Company A (2000-2004) Graphics (Website Developer) All the responsibilities here... Company B (2004-2008) Networking (IT Administrator) All the responsibilities here... |

I just figured I'd put it past you guys to see what was said and was going to change titles anyway, because the old one's are doing nothing for me at all and I have to do something. The economy in FL is fucked and in my neck of the woods it's even worse,so I'm going to have to commute to Tampa and that's about an hour away or on the outskirts of Orlando thats about 1 1/2 hours away. |
