They are everywhere. The whole forest is humming. Empty shells and live ones are all over my trees, bushes, house.  They are basically harmless but they are everywhere

I love that sound!  Reminds me of summer in north Louisiana.  Flippin' north Texas and the lack of real trees!

Excellent fishing bait, put a live one on a hook and watch it get eaten as it squirms on top of the water.

This is what I do with the Japanese beetles and carpenter bees. I must look like a complete fool, but I take their flying as a personal offense that MUST be addressed with force.

Not so many cicadas flying around considering the numbers of empty shells.

Yep.

This year heralds the springtime emergence of billions of so-called
17-year periodical cicadas along a roughly 900-mile stretch from
northern Georgia to upstate New York.

Only fish I caught off of them were carp, but it was a hoot to witness , fuckers were thrashing EACH other to be the first on the hook , bass or anything else couldn't get a swipe,

this was at Liberty Lake (watershed ) in MD. circa late '70s-early '80s.

17-Year Cicadas Horrified To Learn About 9/11

NEW YORK—Following their synchronized emergence this week after
gestating underground since 1996, a colossal swarm of 17-year cicadas
were horrified today to learn about the events of September 11, 2001.
"Holy shit, are you serious?” said one member of the East Coast brood of
winged insects, expressing its continued shock and horror about the
coordinated terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of 3,000 people.
"They just flew the planes right into the fucking buildings? Man, oh,
man. People must have just been completely freaking out. Christ, I know I
would have been.” At press time, the 17-year cicadas were beginning to
express serious doubts about how two structures supported by reinforced
concrete and steel beams could just collapse like that.

Now if only my chickens would eat them. They won't even eat the soft newly molted ones.
