Anyone ever gotten a police trade in Model 10 from Bud's Gun Shop?
The price is tempting and their guaranteed to function but I'm scared I'll get one with lost of rust/pitting/ etc. I understand It will have some holster wear but how bad of shape are they in? Pics will be great if you have them! Thanks! |

They show a sample photo the finish is in rough condition but for $279 you get a 38 revolver with better internal parts - NO MIM Parts these have the firing pin on the hammer they dont make them that way any more now there are more parts to fail and a lock system to fail and jam. Buy it buy some Cerakote bake on finish and refinish it in your oven. These are fun guns to shoot - the fact that they dont stop bad guys very well is an afterthought. Last guy I saw shot in the head with a 38 was still kicking 8 hours later so decide if it meets your needs. |

I think it looks good......I'm confused about 1 thing. How is a 6 shot .38 revolver no legal in California? Is it because it was a police issued weapon? Model 10 |

Model 10 The way I understand it, when California's safety laws were enacted, guns had to be sent in for 'safety testing' of the design. Model ten was not in production at the time so it wasn't approved. IIRC, the Colt Python was also 'not on the list'. |

We didn't get them from Bud's but my wife and I have two of them (3"bbl and 4"bbl). They are GREAT--solid as a rock and excellent shooters. They are old enough they are top quality, smooth as silk, accurate, and with terrific triggers. I strongly recommend them, as they are one of the great bargains in the firearms world. Not many bargains exist anymore. |

I also have one 3" and one 4" that I got from Bud's.
They have some holster wear, but mechanically they are excellent. Both are nice shooters, and they were relatively cheap. .38 Special +p is right at 9mm in power/performance. With the right bullets they are sufficient self defense guns. I bought the 4" heavy barrel, round butt, last year. I was happy enough with it that when the 3" guns were available earlier this month I jumped on one. I would buy another if they get some more 3" guns. |

The one in the photo looks really rough, but the model 10 is a great gun, I might jump on one of those myself. I wish I had heard they had some 3" barrels, I've been wanting one of those for years! When I bought ours the guys in the S&W forum here said the 3" ones are fairly uncommon. |

They are somewhat uncommon in the US market, but were heavily exported, model 10 and 13s, Australia, France, some others I believe. I love the balance and handling of the 3" K frames. |

These guns need to be sent in for drop testing (thousands of dollars), if (when) they pass, buds can pay fees (extortion money) to the state of kalif to list the guns as approved for sale, and then sell those guns here, or wait till they become C&R status. Gun models are added and dropped from the list all the time, the guns can be in production but if S&W does not send in the exact sample model for testing they can not sell here. The python could pass the list and be sold here, but S&W has not decided to do this, being a custom shop gun. |

There is a good thread here in the revolver forum on them. I got one of the 3" ones about a year or so ago, the damn thing has a import stamp |

From what I understand about them most are imports so get ready for a big ugly import mark. To be honest I don't see where they are that much of a deal at $300.00 by the time you are done with your receiving FFL.
I'd not by one blind as "sending it back" ain't cheap. |

I can't believe how bad California is.......... |

OP I imagine that Model 10 would treat you very well. Don't look for a beauty queen at that price but it should be a great shooter and would make a fine handgun to stash somewhere. I was very tempted to buy one when I saw the latest add from Bud's but I don't have the spare scratch right now for even a $300 revolver. |
|
It's a good deal... excellent low-cost "general purpose" gun. About 98% of anything you might need a handgun to do, the Model 10 will do at least an adequate job at.
I need another revolver like I need another hole in the my head, but I'm still thinking about ordering one of these... or two... |
