I'm looking for an open source Help Desk ticketing system for my new employer.  We are a small shop, 100 or so users.  I'd like it to be able to open and track a ticket via Exchange.



Anyone have recommendations?

If its for internal problem tracking you might look at JIRA/Atlassian products.  

If your looking for external help desk where you are dealing with customers etc, take a look at desk.com.
It may not be what you need but it does work well.

Sadly, never had good luck with OS help desk software.

Been in software since '95.  

I'm interested to her what you end up going with!

Atlassian products are HORRIBLE to maintain. Written in java. Confluence like to seize up about once a week. Upgrading their products breaks plugins. And their configuration files are stored in random places and the formatting and options change so you have to reconfigure them from scratch every time you upgrade. They are nice on the surface but ugly underneath. And they are expensive. Several thousand dollars a year for each product for a 100 user license.

Try GLPI if you want something complicated and very configurable. Flyspray bug tracking system if you want something simple.

I have seen plugins break but have not had any issues with the other problems you mention.  I am not going to say they are great but it works.  The great thing about software is there is usually someone else in the game that you can look at.

Check out Spiceworks.  Not open source, but it is free.  I replaced Track-IT! here at my current job with it.  We've got about 1000 users and twice as many items in our inventory and it runs great.

Features include:
User Portal for submission of tickets
AD integration
Network Scan Utility to generate an inventory of devices and software
License Tracking
Email integration for opening/closing/modifying tickets as well as notification messages to technicians and end users
Robust reporting tool that's customizable via SQL scripts if you're into that type of thing

I have used it, and it is pretty decent for being free.
