Young kids can be VERY posessive of their parents/grandparents affection, and they also don't understand death. Could you do the same thing with just a regular Teddy Bear? Just say, "This is special from Grandpa." or something? Sure. And that's a well-known type of healing mechanism for kids. This is just a different option, which gives other adults some reminder of importance as well. Physically - it's just a sack of dirt. It only has the importance that we give it. People get their carbon pressed into synthetic diamonds, right? How is that different than if you use charcoal to get the same thing? It's still just a rock. But people like the idea. And so there you go. |
