I currently have a piece of junk HTC Thunderbolt. I am due for an upgrade.
I am trying to decide between an Iphone 5, Samsung S4 or even just the S3. I am not an Apple fanboy, but the wife and kid both have Iphones. I could possibly just buy a used S3 and keep my unlimited data plan (Verizon). Any advise from those knowing more about cell phones then me would be appreciated. Would buying the used S3 be worth it? Without getting into the Samsung/Apple debate, how is the battery life on the S4 compared to the Iphone 5? Anything else I should take into consideration? Thanks! |

I am in the same boat as you, coming up soon. I have a Samsung Nexus S 4G, and when the time comes, I'm going to get an iPhone.
The Nexus was a great phone, but all kinds of Android OS updates have been pushed to it over the years which have turned it into a slow brick with a data connection that seems to flash on and off like a strobe light. My wife's iPhone, on the other hand, only reached that point when it was about four years old. Her iPhone 5 is, and always has, worked like a champ. Now, for those of you who knew me from a few years ago, you're probably already picking your jaws up off the ground. "mhoffman?? Owning an Apple product?? The end is near!!" To be fair, I've lightened up on my feelings towards Apple over the years. I still won't be caught dead with a Mac, but in terms of smartphones, I think Apple really has their game together. From a techie perspective, though, I really like the Android OS. It's significantly wide open for people to develop on, whereas Apple harnesses a much stricter control over what you can do with an iPhone, and what apps you can download onto it. On the other hand, this restrictive control has resulted in some of the most impressive OS version control I've ever seen. What version of Android do you have on your phone? To answer that, you need to dig around. What manufacturer is it? What model is it? When did you buy it? Has it been serviced anytime recently? Did you download any service packs, patches, or have any pushed to your phone? This is the kind of stuff that results in you having a great deal of skew in what versions of Android are out there. However, with an iPhone, they can essentially pinpoint your OS version simply by getting the model number. Say what you want about Apple, but frankly my observation has been that when it comes to their iPhones, their marketing tagline is pretty much spot on. "It just works". However, if there's anyone out there who disagrees with this, please, tell me about it! I'd like to know all I can before it's time to renew my contract! _MaH |
| I have an S3, and it is GREAT as a sort of "mini computer". I use it as a GPS in the car, a mobile weather center, news outlet, etc. The thing is extremely useful. Just for the hell of it, I went and looked at an S4 yesterday. The screen size is terrific, but the phone itself is physically LARGE. And no matter how great the videos and apps look on that big ass screen, sooner or later you have to stash the phone somewhere other than in your hands. For someone that doesn't carry a purse, that could be a problem. |
