They wanted the "gas" as they left an empty one in, as well as the nozzle they would have needed as they are US manufacture Bayonet style steel cans.

if they have a normal or high compression engine they are fucked, the one can had almost straight condensate in it

That's why you always keep a half-full one of 50/50 gas/salt water. I don't know shit about cars, but someone told me once that that'd be bad news.
ETA: the gas in that one is to avoid SUSPICION.
