I went to the range early this morning to avoid the crowd and any unnecessary attention my beautiful black rifle would garner due to recent events in the news.
I noticed two middle-aged guys who were sticking to themselves and not conversing with anyone else. Kinda strange for this range as everyone is very friendly. So friendly in fact it is hard to squeeze in shooting time with all the guntalk and BS going back and forth.
Anyway, while I am concentrating downrange on my target. I catch one of the guys out of the corner of my eye bending over and picking up ONE of my spent brass and slip it in his pocket. I was in between shock and disbelief when the whoop-ass hairs on my back raised up. Very shortly thereafter they pack up what little stuff they brought with them and walked past my firing position. I made eye contact with one of them and said "If you would have asked I would have given you a whole box full to take with you". I stared them down while they walked back to their car. They never would respond or look at me.

Watch your six at the range gentlemen. I am sure I am not the only one this has happened to in the last few weeks.

Make yourself a nice brass catcher like I did!  Took me 3 hours and $3.  Did they take your pic as well?  Do you have to sign in when you pay?

I love my brass.  I tenderly and joyously reload every one.  Sigh,... Need to go weep over our near loss of brass and fondle those I have left to resize.  Sorry, `snif`, I'm not usually like this.  `sob`

Now, time to think up some witty sayings to put on my brass.

I haven't shot my HBar in a few weeks and have quite a few (thousand) rounds sitting here.

Think they would find it interesting if none of my brass had fingerprints on them.  Or, some interesting sayings on them for their amusement at the lab?

Oh yeah, you should go when the crowds are out.

Show them we black rifle owners aren't the people they think we are.

I hate to tell the Beekeeper that NY is famous for its Ghosts throughout history. If he has an issue with the beings of the netherworld then he has to talk to them.

A trunk rifle should be loaded with sterile ammo. You never know what you may run into (or away from).

I like to go to a full-auto shoot that is held every year at the Hanson Rod and Gun Club. (Near Cape Cod, Mass. -- can you believe it, MA has draconian gun-laws but they still allow full-auto).

Every year, the ATF shows up, and writes down the license tags on every car that is parked in the lot (and there are a hundreds of them).  Most of us are dressed for the summer heat, but these guys are in starched shirts, ties, and suits.

Must be a lot of guys with a lot of time on their hands to spend it that way.

If they looked suspicious like you are indicating: I would drop everything I was doing and politely ask for my brass back, stating that I reload as the reason why.  If they ignore you, make an issue out of it. Having to answer you may force them to expose themselves as [s]nazi's[/s] undercover JBT's.

Never posture though, it would give them an excuse to haul you in and confiscate everything you own.

In Texas, a private citizen has the authority to arrest someone for (witnessed) theft.

TCCP sec. 18.06 or 14.01(a), something to that effect...

"Do you like apples?"
"Yes"
"Well, how 'bout them apples?"

Now that you are in FL, can you imagine what would happen to us here in VA and MD?

I have seen more unmark police cars on the streets and highways lately. And yes, I do look out for that white van too.

My concern would not be that they were looking to compare my brass to the shooter.  I didn't shoot those folks.

The scary thing would be if there guys were associated with the shooter and used the brass to "seed" a shooting site! [shock]

Another reason to carry sterile ammo- you never know who is going to steal it and use it in a crime, or plant it somewhere.

OR you could wind up explaining why yur brass was "planted" by a perp at a crime scene....

Exactly what is "sterile ammo" supposed to be?  If it's brass ejected from your rifle, it's not sterile; it'll have toolmarks from the extraction and ejection.  If it's commercial ammo, is that sterile?  Or are you just cleaning it with rubbing alcohol before you shoot it?

You guys sound like Mafia hitmen.

They mean that you didn't touch it barehanded, ever.  You can always dispose of a firearm later.

A good example would be if you went to NYC or Chicago.  I don't know about you, but I'm carrying anyway.  If I had to use the weapon, I'd just go the F home and melt the thing into a puddle.

No gun, no prints, no charges, no problem.

They're probably just cheapskates gathering brass to reload.

You should have told them to take their filthy dickbeaters off your brass!

My range is private property--is yours?  Were these guys members?  My range takes a very dim view of trespassers.

You need to confront assholes like that--whether they are cops or whatever, they had no right messing with your brass on a hot shooting range.

Just wondering what range. I had the spooks watching the range I used to shoot at. Cecil Webb... they were watching cars  ...seeing who and what was being fired. My little M4 I never took out cause of the prying eyes. I was even asked what was in the case. Thats when I packed up and left with all my toys never to return.

Yes, unfortunately I had an incident a few weeks ago that made me start to think that they are watching the gun clubs and shooting ranges.  A couple of strangers who were brought as guests of a fellow member were walking around asking weird questions and doing goofball things.  I dismissed it at the time, but now I'm not so sure.  One of them said he was "former FBI."  I don't know what to make of it exactly.  You that gut feeling you get when something just ain't right?

If the federales really want to push the issue with me, I will have had no problem taking care of the matter.

Message to FAT, FIB, local goons, etc.:  Keep it up, guys, keep it up!

Heck at least I wait until they leave before I go and pick up their spent casings!

I always say something like "Come to PaPa!" when I find them laying there!
The only place I shoot is at our farm so their all our brass anyway![:D]

Still waiting for the range location.

My range is located on fairly remote private proprty in a ravine like area--mountains on both sides and heavily forested.  The access is about 1/4 mile off a forest road, double gated and locked.  The only way to get photos of members with guns is to stake out the area on foot and hide in the bushes.  If they do that, they might get shot--we've had some trouble with vandalism etc. in the past.

Too bad all ranges aren't so secure/hidden from view.

Watch Six men!

Its a shame, a mans brass isn't even safe these days.  What have things come to?.  Ohh I just pray for the day I buy a 40 acre peice of land in NH or VT so I can go shooting any damn time I please.

They were probably concerned citizens who were doing their patriotic duty by scouting out shooting ranges for anyone shooting a sniper grade assault weapon. They needed to collect evidence such as fired brass and license plate #'s to turn into the TIPS program. What was good enough for muslims is now good enough for gun owners.

Definitely bad form to pick up someone else’s brass while they are still there!

However, once they’ve left, I admit I’ll pick up an empty that I don’t have a sample of.

And if it’s bunch of good brass, I’ll certainly scoop it up (hey, I might decide to reload .25 ACP some day!).
