My Gibson front loader of 13+ years is suffering a drum bearing failure, $30.00 worth of parts but about ten hours of my time to replace them so I'm going new. I have been reading up on Whirlpool Duet, LG and Samsung. I was leaning toward the Whirlpool until I started reading reviews and many complaints of drum bearing failures after 1-2 years, is/was this an older problem that has been addressed in newer releases or are they steaming piles of shit?

IDK, but I wish you good luck and hopefully someone will pop in w/ some wisdom.

I was pretty befuddled when we went to purchase a new washer.

I ended up buying a refurbed commercial maytag from a local dealer, simply because I wanted one that wouldn't break down in a year or 2 (It was cheaper too).

I went with a front loading Samsung. Ten Year warranty on drive components, quiet, and cleans great for a HE washer.

Considered the Maytag but didn't see how a HE top loader can clean "just as well" using less water...

We bought Kenmore Elite HE 4T washer and partner dryer.
Only trouble was anew power board at 5+ years from an old shitty 'last pole on the grid' home in 'Surge Capital of the World,' Orlando, FL.
These bitches rock! Front load. No bearing issues at all.
I heard Samsung were good...warranty is best solution; insure what you can't afford to lose!

But...I tend to buy warranty on items after a little math...probably a non-issue.

I have the duet.  A pencil got down in the pump and fragged it, but I replaced it myself for about $80.  I screwed up the door seal and had to replace it as well.

Been running every day for 8 years now.  Sometimes two or three loads in a day.  Damn fine machine.  If you buy it, spring for the pedestals.  I'm glad that I did.

Why not pay yourself the 50 an hour and fix it?

Our Kenmore W/D are 23 years old. I'll run them till they fall apart.

Not much input on whirlpool, but we bought a Samsung front loader set that is awesome.  Very quiet, reasonable dry time, cleans very well.

I take care of a number of rental properties and have an appliance repair person that I use frequently.

According to them, the most washer that you can get today is a Whirlpool with "as few doodads as possible" on the control panel.

I just finished the kitchen and bath and now have a bedroom stripped to the 2 X 4's awaiting insulation and drywall, I don't have the time room or patience to strip this thing to parade rest. The drum has to be removed and split to access the seal and bearings, I'd rather toss a cinder block in it and record it for YouTube.

I bought a LG high efficiency top loader a couple weeks ago and I'm in love with it.  Full homo.  Whisper quiet, holds a ton of clothes, cleans like a mofo.  Ten year warranty on all the drive bits and the drum.

Good video Moss, looks less painful than the timing belt/water pump I just did on my Tundra a few months back.  Thanks for the replies everyone, I really liked  the LG and Samsung but the Whirlpool fits my space as I'm stacking them. I just ordered the Duet's online at the Home Depot for delivery next Thursday, wish me luck.

Anyway I was running out of room for stickers on the old ones anyway.

Nice stickers.

I'd put the washer on top if possible. Optimization of transfer movement.

Well, maybe not. Electrical issues.

There's a reason that top-loaders now have long warranties, the first few years out their repair history was a disaster and their market share plummeted.  Now with a decent warranty a lot of people will take the chance.  But washers aren't all that hard to fix if something does break.

I just had my new set delivered 2 hours ago.  I'm hoping it was worth the extra cost over a cheap whirlpool set. The sales guy never showed them to me because I said I wanted cheap, but when I saw there info made in Wisconsin all metal construction minimum electronics I told him to get me a set.
