I stayed in one that was not quite as "severe" as the pics you've posted in Taiwan.

I would compare it more to a private sleeper on Amtrak.

Yeah, that'd be the problem for me.  I think the idea is great, and would love to stay in one some time, but there's no way I'd get any sleep.  I had to double-insulate the windows in my new apartment so that the road noise wouldn't wake me up all the time.

Been there, done that. Americans are NOT Japanese. There aren't so bad if you're 5'6" or less, not so much at 6'.
