LA GRANGE, Mo. -
A settlement has been reached in a federal lawsuit against a La Grange police officer for shooting and killing a dog.

According to the agreement, the dog's owner, Marcus Mays, will get $50,000 for damages.

Officer Doug Howell shot Mays' dog on March 31, 2010, when he responded to a dog-at-large call.

Video of the incident, captured from a dashboard video, was posted online.

The City of La Grange and the police chief were dropped from the lawsuit as a part of the settlement.

Guy got the shooting on video too:

That cop needs to no longer be a cop and he needs to spend some serious time behind bars. Fuck his pathetic ass.

Fuck that shit. The dog was just standing there when he shot it. I'd have a hard time NOT finding him off duty if it were my dog, but then again my dogs might as well be my child.

That's what I thought. Then I remembered how much $50,000 is in rural Missouri. You can pay off your double wide with that.

That cop is a chicken shit bitch.

It might be a COC violation but if I saw that in person, I'd fucking beat that cops ass for that.  There is no fucking excuse for what he did.  That dog was NOT a threat to him.  That pathetic excuse of a piece of fucking trash does not need access to a loaded gun and should in no way have any kind of authority that a badge provides.

That cop is more of a danger to the community than that dog ever was.

Looks like he got frustrated with dog all moving around and "resisting".  Appears he just wanted to get outta there and not deal with it.  What a pos.

Owner needs to keep better tabs on doggie though.

CO recently passed a law dealing with cops shooting dogs, seeing as it is becoming a trend............of isolated incidents.

Norhing against cops, but 50K? No. The only settlement that would be acceptable to me if it were my dog would be I get to scare the fuck out of the cop, get a rope around his neck and let him struggle to get away, then shoot him in the stomach once, let him linger for a bit then finish HIM with a shot to the fucking head. But I doubt the city would agree to it

Pure scum. A shitty excuse for a human being that should be put down.

He shot the dog when it was already in the catch pole? WTF....

Load doggie in the back of the car and drive his fuzzy butt to the shelter. When you get there, if doggie is being a dick the nice young ladies at the shelter will usually come out and give a hand. I did it dozens of time.

That was total bullshit. The dog was restrained.

Put a catch pole on my dog and then shoot it? I will respond in kind.

I agree on that.

Dog was not being aggressive when he shot it, and he had it on the catch pole.

if he had been one of my officers when I was on...he would have been fired

Better question would be, how did someone manage to tie the dog up to the pickup truck without having to shoot it? I mean, that was the only option available, apparently. Shooting it, I mean.

Two very different things.

Wow. I would have not settled at $50,000 after seeing this video. The cop had the dog under control and then shot the dog? I don't understand the reasoning behind that. Maybe $250,000 and the termination of that cop from the force would be a start. Even though it may be just a dog to some, it is the officers actions that I am more worried about than anything. I would be afraid for my life if he ever had me in handcuffs.

Where was the owner?
Why did he leave the dog out?
Who made the call in the first place?
Is this the first time?
Did they pay 50 grand for the dog?
Do they hunt?  I mean, i am sure there is someone out there that love deer...
