Recently, some discussion of Australian gun control came up on a local forum. After looking at the results of the Aussie effort, I decided to publish some thoughts. I am sorry to keep bombarding GD with all these boring informational threads, but I want to make sure everyone has good info should it be needed. Let me know what you think and I would love to have some input from the Aussies that hang out here.

| Great information......too bad it will have no effect on the debate. The anti gun response will be that Australian gun control works. Because it destoryed the budding "gun culture' before it could be come like the US. If Australia had not passed thier NFA......Firearms deaths would be like that in the US. |

Yes, on some the information will be lost. I make no mistakes when looking at this sort of data that there will be people who irrationally refuse to be swayed. Still, there are some who may find it useful. I hope that my previous discussion on cultural differences will help tell the whole story, but I am willing to concede that some simply won't care. |

What your data proves is that gun control isn't about crime control. Crime is just the excuse the gun controllers use to sell gun control. Gun control is a social issue that has little to do with actually preventing violent crime. |
| Not to put to fine a point on the issue....but actually Australian gun control works from the point of veiw of the anti gunner. Australian gun violence is quite a bit less than the US. In the mind of the anti gunner this is because Australians don't view guns the same way Americans do. And that is the true goal of the anti gunner.....changing the mindset of the public. And the fact that the Australian people have not repealed thier NFA.....proves that it works. |

Which is what every reputable study I have ever read on any the correlation/causation between gun control and crime control has ever said. No link. |

Of course.....gun controllers just hate guns and the people that own them. But they also know that Americans love their guns.......and they want to change that mindset. The idea is that make guns harder to get and keep till the point where "we" just give up. And after a few decades people will just not care about owning them. Example I talk to quite a few Europeans.....and none of them hate guns. But thet just don't care or see a point of owning them. And most have never even touched a firearm out side military service. This is what the anti gunner lives for....and why they love talking about how cool European [Germans.French,Belgien etc] culture is. |

I had always assumed that the majority of those populations would be anti-gun rather than apathetic towards them. |

I had always assumed that the majority of those populations would be anti-gun rather than apathetic towards them. Not in my dealings.....most think shooting would be fun. The majority of my co workers think firearms are facinating. And when I show them picture of my guns. they all wanted to go shooting. One of my friends just married a Filipino girl.....and when he went to meet her family they took him shooting. And he got to shoot a suppressed 22 bolt gun and a submachine gun....local made by the way. |
