Last year I listened to the wise sages here and bought cheap and stacked deep, I also got into reloading last fall and that has kept my ammo stores topped off to a degree. I also find the occasional deal that I jump on here and there, but with ammo prices where they are I know I can't last forever without decreasing my shooting to close to nothing. This is difficult as I recently got my formerly anti-gun girlfriend addicted to shooting and she is constantly wanting to go.
I have been wondering, will supply ever catch back up to demand and prices decrease back to where they were after the panic subsides? Or will they drop back to half of what they are now, but still significantly higher than they were and become the new norm? I was in Iraq during that whole period with gas prices shooting up to $5+ a gallon, but now they are still twice as high as they were and that is the new norm. Are we going to see the same thing with ammo, where we just get accustomed to the higher prices, thankful that they are not as high as they are now? |

IMHO: pre shithead prices plus @10% and instock online by Christmas. This, kinda... Ammo falls back, but not all the way, and plateaus while inflation shrinks the dollars and catches up with the "new normal". The best time to buy is right before the panic hits, that's when ammo is the "cheapest" due to level prices, but the shrinking dollar. Yay.
For instance, here's a selection of Winchester and Remington ammo from 1968... in 1968 dollars. Handgun Cartridges (Boxes of 50) .357 Magnum (158 gr JHP) = $8.45 ----- 2012 $55.01 .38 Special (158 gr SJHP) = $7.45 ----- 2012 $48.50 9mm Luger (124 gr FMJ) = $7.90 ----- 2012 $51.43 .45 ACP (230 gr FMJ) = $9.05 ----- 2012 $58.91 Shotgun Cartridges (Boxes of 25) 12 ga. Field Loads = $3.75 ----- 2012 $24.41 (HOLY CRAP!) 20 ga. Field Loads = $3.40 ----- 2012 $22.13 (DAMN...) Rifle Cartridges (Boxes of 20) .223 Remington (55 gr SP) = $4.50 ----- 2012 $29.29 .270 Winchester (130 gr SP) = $6.20 ----- 2012 $40.36 (Maybe not out of line for premium uber magnum match/hunting ammo today, but 1968 bullet design was still pretty basic) .308 Winchester (180 gr PP) = $6.20 ----- 2012 $40.36 .458 Winchester Magnum (500 gr MC) = $18.40 ----- 2012 $119.78 (Jeebus... What does that compare to? Uber match .50BMG, or super-fancy Nitro elephant gun rounds?) Mean/average income for a white male has been relatively flat when adjusted for inflation. Maybe up by $1000 than it was today. |

PSA today had 30 rd. boxes of AE .223 on strippers for $18 and change. May still have, haven't looked in hours. As badly as I wanted to... I just won't pay that. Barring any new shootings, I fear that is the best we will see till July of 2014. 60 cent a round plus shipping for 223 will be the new absolute low. |

The bad thing is, I can see the reason for a price like that for .223. But .10 or more a rd. for .22 lr, if you can even find it??? The gouging for .22 is all out of proportion to centerfire ammo. |

Don't you guys worry. The government will help us with an ammo rationing system.
Biden is hard at work as we speak, developing a quota system, and an odds & even system just like gas rationing in the '70s. Everyone will get their government mandated "fair share" |
I hope prices come down soon, I am stocked up pretty well since I adopted the philosophy that I was going to buy a little here and there whenever possible since the scare of 08 caught me off guard. I do miss being able to swing buy the local WM and be able to buy 1-200rds of 9MM or 40. The thing that really gets me is how some of these guys think that a couple hundred rds of 9MM is like a gold bar, I seen a ad lastweek on Armslist where a guy had a very small amount of cash(his words) a couple hundred rds of 9MM and a couple hundred rds of 45 and he wanted to trade even up for a Glock 17 or 19 I was like really??? then he had the nerve to put in the ad dont over value your Glocks because they are showing back up on shelves...I thought seems like you are over valueing your ammo even more.
