Should one of our honorable Arfcommers feel the need to cut his belly open (in protest of perma-ban for posting wall to wall penii, for example), here's a handy-dandy guide.

"Seppuku absolutely requires a minimum of two participants. Waiting to die from disembowelment is a notoriously drawn out process, very messy and trying for the spectator. Since the Empoera (late 17th century) only loonies such as Mishima and characters in Samurai dramas actually waited for hours to contemplate their entrails by- the-light-of-the-rising-sun - there is no need for you to indulge in anything so vulgarly melodramatic."

Note the cross-promotion with Amazon for a set of fine German kitchenware on the web page.

eta: the quoting machine does not seem to be working.

"Category Violence/Hate/Racism is filtered."

Awesome link, bro.

Anyhow, you don't cut your belly open.  That's fucking stupid.

The curve of the sword goes upward, and you shove it upwards underneath your ribcage and into your heart.

You got 20 seconds at most if you do it right - and Samurai, who were well-educated in terms of human anatomy - knew how to do it right.

That's odd... The website is actually based in Fukuoka, Japan about life in Japan by one Nicholas May, and does not seem to be updated since 1997.  It's hardly Storm Front, but what do I know.

The point is that an individual would disembowel them self, and an associate would use a sword to decapitate the individual.

The rules for this procedure were spelled out in exacting detail.

I can imagine that after a few rather undignified incidents, they made up rules to keep it honorable.

- Imagine that one guy who stuck the blade in and started screaming like a bitch, fainted, or worse yet, chickened out and started running.  Better get a second to finish him off.

- But that one guy who swung to hard and send the head rolling, spewing blood all over the emperor and other refined gentlemen of the court, ruining their fine silk suits ("Oh man!  These are Italian!").  Better leave a little skin to keep it in place, and makes it look like he's bowing.  Much better.

etc etc.

That's exactly how it is done.

And for the women arfcommers, remember, when dispatching yourself, make sure to tie your ankles together with a silk rope, lest your lady parts be exposed during your death throes.

umm, I'm going with no on this.

"seppuku" = cutting the stomach
"hari kiri" = belly-cut
"hara-kitte fukusu" = he cut his belly and fell down dead
"hara o kakikitta" = he ripped open his belly
"jigai" = self inflicted death
"seppuku" was the official legal term for self execution by samurai during the Tokugawa period (1603-1867)
Tokugawa execution manual specifies the samurai performing ritual suicide as "seppuku-jin" (stomach cutter)
The blade is refered to as the  "hara-kiri-ha" (blade for belly ripping)

"ichimonji" = one horizontal cut
"jumonji" = two crossed cuts
"hachimonji" two upright cuts
"sanmonji" three horizontal cuts
"tachi-bara" stomach cut performed in the standing position
"kama-bara" belly rip using a sickle (kama)
"kage-bara" concealed belly rip

one of the Japanese words for suicide is "jiketsu" = self determination.

There's some debate over hari-kari vs. seppuku, but according to wiki, seppuku is the written form, and hari-kari is the spoken form (why it's not kupusep I don't know).  But then it may be like mag vs. clip debate.

And my understanding is that you only use the tip of your blade, however long it may be, and rest wrapped in paper for a less painful grip.  So you do slice your belly open rather than just stabbing yourself, and for most part only tanto and wakizashi were used.
