Need New glass for my .308 bolt gun. Budget is $400. No fixed magnification, and hopefully more than 10x. Any ideas?

Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 or you can get a few other models for about the $400 zone but you'll have to look hard.

Vortex gets excellent reviews.

Does that $400.00 include rings and base?  Is this for hunting or target shooting?

Already have base and 30 mm rings. Target shooting . Had a swfa 10x but don't like fixed mag.

Get the Vortex Viper, 6.5-20x50.  They make a 44mm and 50mm objective model, depending on your ring height.  It is a bit more than you want to spend ($459), but for 30mm tube it is the lowest I would recommend going in variable power.  I have one in 6.5-20x50 on my 7mm RM bolt gun with the discontinued target dot reticle and it has been great for what I paid.  Excellent tracking, target knobs (with caps) with positive clicks and the glass is not bad for the price.

This.  Although my budget was about $500, I ended up with a VXIII 3.5-10 with the Boone & Crocket reticle.
