My friend was out weeding his yard, looked up, and this thing scampered up to say hello:



Managed to get a pic, but the capture attempt was unsuccessful.  They'll be on the lookout for "Joey" next time they're outside.  I don't really know what I'm looking at.  Half beaver/half hamster? ManBearPig? Possible dikfer?  Central coast of CA is the AO in question.

My first thought was that it was a kangaroo rat but the hind feet are not long enough. After looking at some pics of voles on the 'net, I think those who said vole are right.
