So I'm taking a class, "Survey of Corrections", which is a senior level course and we're supposed to comment on student's writings about the topic for the week. This week we're supposed to write about unjust punishment and ways to mitigate the problem. The following is one FSA member's input:
The problem with unjust punishment is that it is cruelty to people who sometimes have not committed any crime as well as others that have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. Unjust is violating principles of justice; unjust punishment; an unjust judge; an unjust accusation. I know someone have known or know a person who have been punish unjustly. For example, I was accuse of harrashing my children father girlfriend at that time I had no phone to do anything that I was accuse of. I was wrongly arrested and process I have never had anything under my name nothing at all not even a speeding ticket. Make a long story short I was in jail for 22 hours than i was bailed out; once i went to court it was drop because she did not have anything that she accuse me of but she was able to take a warrant out and she put the wrong address so i did not get a court date to come and defend myself so that resulted in a bench warrant for my arrest. Unjust punishment are happening everywhere to avoid unjust accusing and punishment the police as well as judge need to make sure they have evidence, black and white recording, video etc. to make sure theirs no injustice. Some people never bounce back from unjustice.
How would you respond? |

How would you respond? Ok...is it just me...or does that paragraph have a ton of Grammar problems...It was really hard to read.... I would get a red pen and send it back to him with corrections. |

This. Proofread the paper and send it back. Ask for a rewrite. Is the purpose of the class to argue the topic, or English composition? If it's composition, leave your politics out of it. If you don't you've committed the same sin we accuse liberal professors of doing. Show that you're better than they are. |

As frequently happens here, I am confused. You are taking a senior level class, Survey of Corrections. Who are the students upon whose work you are supposed to comment? Those in some other class? Your own classmates? We're supposed to comment on each other's "discussion". You read some chapters, do some research, post comments in a message board environment. So I have my discussion posted and then I have to comment on other's discussion. |

Those in some other class? Your own classmates? I expect that he's supposed to comment on his classmates' work. This is not uncommon. |

Another student's post:
Unjust punishment
I feel that death row is an unjust punishment! Why ? someone that committed a crime that get the death penalty and once the person is put to death, what did that person really learn about committing a crime. I feel the person should be given life in prison without the possibility of parole. A person took someones life deserve to set in a small cell the rest of their lives and think about the wrong they have bone. That is one punishment I feel violate a person human rights. What about the innocent ones on death row waiting their turn, but this inmate know he didn't do the crime, that's totally wrong killling innocent people and the ones thats guilty. I also think that when a black man kills a white man, he gets the death penalty, and when it black on black crime the criminal goes to jail. Whats right about that ? Killing is killing. I feel to correct some of the wrongs, laws need to be reevaluated and come up with better solutions. Amagine being put in prison for life and not death row, and you know you didn,t commit the crime you are in prison for, I could amagine how that person feels. I feel all murderous should all be in one prison together and all the other different crimes thats been committed, house those prisoner's together. I feel like that is an answer to eliminate over crowding of prisons. I read in the text book, death row is more humane than life in prison because it is quick, making a prisoner suffer by remaining in prison for the rest of their life is more torturous and inhumane than execution. I don't feel that way, the person is getting off easy by being put to death. The prisoners didn't really have time to set and just wonder what if ? Let the criminals set it out for life. That would save tax payers a whole lot of money. That money can be used to pay the Police Officer's more money, and other Criminal Justice agencies. |

Just go ahead and give the student an A+. He will continue with the same attitude and inability until he is released and will receive all of the support the state can provide no matter what you do. The system has already failed by allowing this guy to be "senior level" and you cant fix it. ETA: no idea what gender the offender is. Grammar and punctuation might have clarified that for me.

Is your professor cool? If so talk to them about it, say you want to do your assignment but you don't even know where to start because the poster 1) did not complete the assignment correctly and 2) it does not make any sense.
If the professor is a douche, just comment on due process and rights of the accused. Seems BS-able. |
That is a writing example from a senior (400) level college English course? Someone needs to go back to basic freshman (100) level English composition or better yet to high school English class.
ETA: Since you posted an example of another classmates work that is just a bad as the first I have a question. Grammar errors aside, do these people not know how to use spell check? Amagine |

As soon as someone starts using "What Ifs" for their argument, I stop listening. "What if a fucking meteor came out of the sky and hit you?" "What if a Pontiac Grang Am cross bread with a Ford Ranger and made little Gran Am Ranger Babies?" Its that's fucking stupid. If anything, we need to hurry up the death penalty process. There are also cheaper, more humane ways of killing someone. IE. 9MM Hollow Point to the Dome. /end rant |

How would you respond? "The failure of grammar in this comment mirrors it's failures in logic. Both are overwhelming and wholly obfuscatory to whatever unlikely gems of reason might be contained within it's tangled narrative." |

Quoted: As a student in an online degree program (also not at a diploma mill), I have also noticed that writing and grammar sucks. I'm a senior (graduating this semester!), so all my classes are 3000 & 4000 level classes. We just took a test in my Municipal govt class, and afterwards the professor went on a rampage because the quality of the writing was so poor. Apparently, some of the students are not used to essay-based exams. I'm not sure how this is even possible, since I was taking them in high school. Certainly, by the time you get to upper level college courses, you should expect most of your work to be some kind of writing. The capstone for my degree, which I'm working on right now, is a 25-40 page research paper, which has to be properly cited, among other things. Some of these kids can't even write a simple 5-paragraph essay!Quoted: I need pics. Its an online course at Troy University, not a diploma mill. |

Hand it back with editing marks. Ask for a complete rewrite with punctuation, spelling, construction and grammar erors corrected.
I would expect that shit in first year HS but it's completely unacceptable for college, even at the freshman level ...but, I understand it's the new "normal". Good luck. |

I need pics. Its an online course at Troy University, not a diploma mill. I get pissed when I have to comment on two students' comments and I can't because the writing is atrocious and horrible. I have expectations of college and miss the physical classes... just so I can see some of these people in person and raise the issue in person. |

Line through all the bad grammar, respond that you can't thoughtfully respond to their comment due to all the words that are crossed out and not being able to comprehend what they are trying to convey. |
