Who here has one? The wife has given the go ahead on getting one.

I want to purchase one instead of piecing my own together, but a full kit is ok. I come from a machining background and have a decent understanding of computers and CAD.

I have seen the maker bots but I think I like the printer bot more. Are there any good deals I am missing?

May want to look up a local hackerspace.  The one near me in Milwaukee has a great crew willing to show and tell and compare constrast the strengths/troubles/etc, and get a chance to see some in person.

Also check out the IRC channel.. (#reprap) lots of great info there.... If you do decide to do it yourself I have a Google spreadsheet made with parts, pricing and vendors I could share with you.

I have looked at the reprap. I didn't know they had an IRC.

There aren't any local hacker spaces. I met some guys at maker fair but they area couple hundred miles away.

Thanks for the info everyone!

FYI - makergear's lead time is 8-9 weeks, not 6 like they said. Mine should hopefully come in some time next week

Would one of those kits manage an AR lower?

And do the printed lowers com out complete with threads and holes, or is this more like an 80% with machining left to be done?

My son is an Engineering student and has a class centered around the 3D printer. I'll ask him what they're using in class.

i have been thinking the prices of these things and the quality of the machine should improve by leaps and bounds the next few years.  I would research more and maybe hold out.  Makes me think of things like the home pc or the first dvd players that couldnt be found for under 1000

but once you get one can i pm you stuff i want to get made

Ive got one on my wish list
