I'm trying to replace the line, and can't get the spool out.  Manual says to turn the bump knob counter clockwise, but it just turns freely, any ideas?

it's a craftsman 25cc

Hold the spindle with one hand, turn the knob with the other hand?   (obviously, do not do this while it is running!!!!!!)

Maybe you need to push down while turning, like a pill bottle?

If you can see where the head separates, try gripping on either side of those.

If you had a picture of your whacker's head, it would be a lot easier to point out.

Here's a link to the manual, it didn't do me any good though

I'm holding the spindle to keep it from turning, but it feels like something is turning inside.  It's really got me pissed

Don't get pissed, these things are all fucking built to give you a heart attack trying to get them apart.  It's like the maker of the MkII/III was the same guy who designed these fucking things.

Are you screwing it counterclockwise, as in the you would naturally do to unscrew something?  I only ask because sometimes when you get upset, you forget small shit (at least I do).

I have it upside down, looking at the spindle I'm turning it counter clockwise.  It sounds to me like the entire flex shaft is spinning when I turn the bolt.

hmmm.....I don't think that is supposed to happen........the way I read it, when you turn the knob, it's supposed to unscrew..........and if you press down while you turn, and it does the same thing....it might be broken or the bolt could be rusted/seized.  This would be my diagnosis.  If you haven't run it in a while, or unscrewed this thing it could have been torqued by the motor, seized, or rusted.  Is it new, or a few years old?

Past that, the manual gives me a picture of a bolt that secures through the head(s), directly to the shaft.  The ONLY thing I can think of that would cause this would be a stuck bolt.

I don't know what else to tell you, because that's really all that could go wrong.  I also don't know if there is any way to get a wrench on the shaft so that you could get the other side of that bolt from turning.

I'd be careful spraying penetrating oil, it might ruin the plastic.
