Looks like Kansas is set to lift the ban on switchblades. Of course I never really cared about them but now must have one!
What does GD like/recommend say under $200? |
|
Carried a Microtech Ultratech for years & it always worked.
Had to stop when Wisconsin got concealed carry because it was clearly a violation in the "rule" book. Don't want to loose the right to carry a gun over a knife
Yes, I know it was not legal before CCW in WI, We all must choose our battles |

Link? This is very relative to my interest.
Not to burst your bubble but... I lived in a switchblade state and carried one for years. OTF and side opener. The best knife, IMO, to carry is a spring assisted side opener. I've carried one for a few years. I will probably buy a Microtech OTF when the law passes

Quoted: "under $200" and "automatic knife" don't go too well together. I'm going to have to say what everyone else has said. Benchmade or microtech. Meh it's not THAT bad. You're certainly not going to get a good OTF for that price though... I paid $165 for my Benchmade mini-Stryker, but that was a decade ago. I haven't priced autos lately. With all the Axis lock BM's I have(love the Contego I picked up recently, and just got a Triage last week), it just doesn't seem all that necessary So no, no more autos for me. I think the next fancy knife I get will probably be a BM balisong. |

Benchmade makes an automatic Axis lock |
|
Quoted: Benchmade makes an automatic Axis lock Seems redundant ![]() I've never actually looked at that one. But all my axis lock knives(I think I have 4 of them now) flip open very easily. Actually, my Contego was TOO loose and I had to tighten it up a bit. An OTF like the Infidel or an older Microtech HALO would be fun, I came close to picking up a BM 3500 once(I love the design, I have a 350 and 530), but really the autos are a bit of a hassle legally speaking. Here in Oregon they are legal to own and carry, but cannot be concealed. And of course being in Portland, and going across the river into Washington fairly often where they are not legal, makes it somewhat impractical to carry on a daily basis. So while there are a few autos I'd like to play with, I think the next "toy" purchase will be a BM42. I have a couple of cheap balis that I play with from time to time, but it would be nice to get a high end one. |

Quoted: Quoted: they are cheap and made into an auto when they come into the country making the warranty void. I had so many break that I quit selling them, I couldn't suggest it in good faithBoker Kalashnikov For around the $30 mark, they're alright entry level knives. ![]() I'd much rather have a Kershaw Blur though. For autos, it's tough to beat a Microtech. Really it depends on what you can afford, and there is a lot of stuff out there these days. http://htmknives.com/proddetail.php?prod=Gunhammer_Auto_SAS_ETAC_Grip_Bowie |

Another vote for the high quality and customer service of Pro-Tech: I have one of their single-action OTFs that has served on six deployments, and I probably need to send it back for a cleaning and sharpening. It has been used thousands of times for its intended purpose without failure, and the collector crowd ("knife people" are their own special breed) would chastise me for using a limited run knife as a tool. A knife means nothing more to me than a good hammer. Conversely, I have a son who loves knives, so I see a stop at Smoky Mountain Knife Works Edited to add I will be sampling a Microtech DA OTF to see what it's about. |

I was never a fan of otf autos for carry. I have a mtech scarab that worked fine until it didn't. Carried in front pocket, it eventually got clogged with pocket lint and dirt. I took it apart, cleaned it out, and put it back in the safe where it belonged.
An otf might work for you, maybe your pockets are cleaner than mine. I bought some Lone Wolf autos for my brother and I years ago. I carried a Diablo model for a couple years and it never failed to open. Looks like a conventional folder and can function like one, but slide the scale back and it opens automatically. I've got a used one and a new one in the safe. In TN we can't carry them (I decided carrying an auto knife wasn't worth potential consequences). I had heard that benchmade bought Lone Wolf knives. I'd strongly suggest one of their leaf sprung auto side openers if they're still made. ymmv and all that. |

Pro-Tech FTW. But expect to pay more than $200. I've been carrying a Pro-Tech Godfather for over ten years and it is a solid reliable tool. If it breaks, or needs sharpening send it back with $10 and they refurbish it and have it back within days. I paid $208 shipped from onestopknifeshop.com. AB |
