I let myself go a bit. Gained a little weight, got lazy. Ive decided I have to run a 5K before Im 50. I can do it no problem, but I needed motivation to get the coats off the treadmill and start running. I watch the news. If that doesnt give you the motivation to get ready I dont know what else will. All the guns, bullets, swords etc cant help you if you cant climb the stairs or run a mile.
Trust me I just started lost 5 lbs and have 15 to go, Im in no way a fitness guru, but interesting times ahead and I think maintaining your own health is just as important as keeping your gear maintained.

If you have any excercises you could reccomend for core building Id appreciate it. Thanks and good luck.


PS-I asked Bloomberg to ban Twizzlers, Entenmanns chocolate donuts and reeses peanut butter cups. Since Im obviously not responsible enuff to handle them

I'm a bit intimidated after watching my 22 year old daughter get started, and hanging out while my 13 year old son does their "middle schooler" program 3 times a week, but I am starting the "on-ramp" at a local cross-fit gym Monday Morning


I need to embrace the suck before the suck embraces me.

I honestly think anyone who isn't bedridden should be able to hit a 5K run, cold-on-the-spot, anytime, for any reason.
Sneakers, steel-toed boots, whatever.  It's only 3.1 miles.

If you can't (or just never tried and just don't know your abilities), then YES, by all means neccesary, DO IT!

My dad is almost 50, and I am a fit dude, but I wouldn't tangle with the grizzled old bastard.

He has that old man strength that only comes from 40 years of working with his hands, I only half the time on him, he can still grab my hand and squeeze it like hes gonna crush it.

LOL no, I'm not intimidated by my kids ( although I can see how you read it that way! ) I'm intimidated by the workouts and how badly it is going to suck for the first two weeks until this old and decrepit body of mine makes the adjustment. After watching the kids workouts, I have a hunch that "sore" isn't even going to begin to describe what I am going to be feeling.

Start counting calories and make sure your burning more then you munch. Far as core strength do captains chair leg lifts and flutter kicks.

It's true, a 5k isn't too bad. Once you get a groove going you should be able to cruise right through it in no time.

The first one I ever ran I bought a brand new pair of shoes the day before, my feet were killing me.

Other than a few people have needed to repeat either week three or four, I've never seen this fail.

It all becomes easier when working out is part of your day....

Stick with it and go get sweaty for a half hour 4-5 times a week.

I do Crossfit, MMA, weights, running, etc....

Mixing it up makes it more fun and seems to confuse the body which has good results.

Good luck with reaching your goals..!

I miss doing MMA/BJJ
While rolling one night I got my neck tweaked and couldent turn my head to the right without feeling like dropping to my knees and crying for about 3 months.
No more BJJ for me

I'm starting work back up next week.

If you want to come help for a month I can gaurantee you'll feel like a million bucks.

All I do is either lifting and moving with heavy things, or shoveling and pickaxing.

I go from winter soft to brick shit house in about 4 weeks each spring, they are usually a sore 4 weeks though.

This I started did 3 weeks then went out of town for 2 weeks for work (a couple of months ago) and I'm going to start it over again.  Works really good if you have a smart phone, down load the free app and it tells you when to walk and run.

Push ups are awesome for your core.

I try to do small sets of them each day, like 20 pushups 4 or 5 times a day, and the same for 10 pull ups.

I don't try to get huge or anything, just maintain working strength, if you don't use it you lose it.

Good luck. I've never been a runner. Even when I was hitting the gym and doing cardio out the ass, I never could run more than about a 1/4 mile. I could walk uphill forever though.

OP how are your knees?

You may want to look into an eliptical for early training if you tend to get sore knees.

Mine are pretty much shot from too many hits playing soccer, they get really sore fast, but the eliptical doesn't bother them.

This! IMO this is one of the best programs out there for strength training.  Combine with interval training on the off days it's unbeatable.

Started Taekwondo/Hapkido 4-5 times a week, in November plus Couch-to-5K and Weight Watchers in late November.

I have lost 40 lbs, I can do three sets of sparring matches in 2 hours and I regularly run 5K (3 times a week).

I still want to lose 20+ more lbs and I feel like shit (and really miss it) if I have not been to the gym in 2 days.

I am 42...  figured now or never.

Do this and you will cuss me for 2 weeks. Keep doing it and you will be buying me beer. Great workout. Short amount of time but intense.

It is one that you can do even if you havent worked out in years. Mostly body weight and only as many reps as you can do correctly in 1 minute for each exercise.

I am in pretty decent shape but it gives me a good working. I walk out of the gym looking like I went swimming in my clothes. Have had people come up to me after I was done and ask if I was doing the Spartacus workout and then telling me how well it did for them.

I was 185 when I got married.  18 months later I was 205.  I had promised myself and The Little Red-Headed Woman that I would not fatten back up.

I've lost nearly 10 of those pounds so far.  My clothes fit better, I feel better, and TLRHW is happier.

We are both in our 50s and extra pounds are a very bad idea.

I just started getting into shape myself since the kids are finally old enough to not need attention 24/7

I've been doing a treadmill free-weight combo primarily.  While walking on the treadmill I do free-weight exercises on my upper body.  Curls, arm raises, military press, triceps, etc.  I do those each for 60 seconds for the first 10-15 minutes while walking at a brisk pace depending on which day I am at on my routine (I use lighter weights some days and heavier weights others).  Then put them down and run for the remainder of 20 minutes.  Then I hop on an elliptical I just bought for 5-10 minutes then go do pushups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, bicycle kicks, and other exercises like that to finish off.  It's a way to pack a lot of calorie burning in with little time impact.

Doing that I have technically lost right at 10 pounds but I've also put on enough muscle that my wife has said "you've gotten a lot bigger."   Fat wise I've probably shed 15ish pounds since I've started by my estimation.  I'd like to lose another 10ish pounds of fat, what can I say I got lazy.  I should be there easily by summer.

That may not be the best exercise program in the long run or for everyone, but considering how much time I have to devout to working out it's the most effective for me at this point.

My sides of my lower back were in agony after the day I did deadlifts for the first time in years. Quit though? NFW!

One of my co-workers is a former professional body builder (like Mr. Universe style) and he gave me a workout that he does regularly.

Its called the 100's. You pick a body part. Say biceps. You find a MACHINE (emphasis for importance. do not try this with free weights!!) say preacher curl machine. Pick a LIGHT weight and you do as many of 100 reps as you can. The number you do is how many seconds you can rest after that set before you finish the 100 off. So you do 65 on the first go, you get 65 seconds rest. Then you have to do 35 more reps. If you only do 20, you only get 20 seconds and it will be a very long workout for you. Great exercise for burnout.

Well, the first time I did it, I went way too heavy on the preacher curl machine. For 2 whole weeks, I could not physically force my arms to straighten out. Could not. I walked around like T-Rex for 1 week and slightly less so for the 2nd week. It was pretty bad

Since then I have used LIGHT weights and have gotten a great pump from it, good finishing exercise burnout, but no more T-Rex.

Why the f…… would you want to kill your knees running in work boots?    Total fail

I run 5K around 18 minutes 3 time a week but would never do it in my works boots, my knees would be sore for a week

I am 47 and started running 3 years ago.  Changed my life.  I run two 5k runs a week and have started running 5 miles at a time creeping toward a 10k run.

I want to run a half marathon this summer.

I like to do Insanity, full body workout and a lot of core work. I have one more workout day left (tomorrow) for this round.

Like others have said, work through the soreness. When I started, I had a hard time standing up/sitting down for about a week. Stairs KILLED me. But, as much as it hurt, I hit "PLAY" every day. Without fail, my sore legs felt better after the workout than before. And a week later, all soreness was gone no matter how hard I pushed the workout.

Gonna try to figure out some kind of weight routine to alternate in after I'm done, but I don't have any equipment but a set of PowerBlocks and no bench.

Everyone works out for their own goals. All I do is comprehensive lifts for functional strength.

I just saw that there is an Android app that organizes and times this work out for you that you can customize and records your results. It had 130+ reviews and a 4.5 out of 5 star rating with a lot of very positive feedback. I went ahead and bought it since it was $4.
