I bought a Lee Enfield that has been sporterized. The previous owner had the bolt chromed. How do I get this back to the original state. Can the chrome be removed?

You sure it's chromed and not just highly polished??  If it is decoratively chromed, you'd have to take it to a chroming facility to have the electrostatic process reversed, I should think.  If it were a dimensionally non critical part, you could take the stuff off with abrasives, but with something like a bolt, you'd be risking ending up with a very sloppy fitting piece.

On the other hand, if it's hard chromed, which would be a dull silver kind of finish, I'd leave it on. It'll give you a slicker action and essentially no wear on the surface even after thousands of cycles.
