I have finally decided to get a smaller pistol for the summer and looking at the smith J frame in 38. Which one does Arf like the best? Who makes the best pocket holster?

442, spend as much as you like on a pocket holster. Mika's are good, Uncle Mike's is almost a rite of passage. Tons of leather options too.

I have a 442, I'd buy a 642 if I could do it again. I've had issues with the carbon steel cylinder on the 442 rusting.  Whichever one you choose, buy one without the lock, and CT grips are a great upgrade.

340 M&P or PD. Might as well keep the .357mag option open. Uncle Mikes pocket holster is the best IMO, I've tried the Blackhawk version and went back to the UM's.

The 642 is the way to go. It is light and rust proof. The Kramer pocket holster is good but there are other good ones. The lighter guns are not worth the money for the difference it weight. Look around and find a no lock model.

Looks like the non lock 642 is the better gun. Thanks for all your help.

442 with crimson trace grips and an uncle mikes iwb.  Love that little fucker.  Goes everywhere with me.  Concealable with shorts and a T-shirt which is a must in this hot ass place.

I have one.  It shoots well, has a decent trigger and is a nice gun for the price.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone.

But in purely subjective, unquantifiable terms...... it doesn't feel quite as nice or solid as my buddy's 642.  Couldn't tell you why, it just feels a little cheaper.  Could be 100% in my head.

Go with the 642 unless you want to get beat to death waiting on them to bleed out from the mag of .25  you just dumped in them.

I'd say whichever of the stainless-frame models you like best. I don't remember what the model numbers are, except the 60. But there's also one with the shrouded hammer and one hammerless with SS frame. I happen to like the weight tradeoff for a little bit more shootability with warmer loads.

But YMMV. I really, really liked the Model 60 Pro, I just wish they made it in a K-frame size.

Any Airweight/Airlight hammerless J-frame.

Bang for the buck, 642 is without equal.

340 for ammo versatility and slightly lighter weight. But will cost a lot more for those slight advantages.

Kramer pocket holster.

642 here, and +++1 on the Bob Mika pocket holster. They look like hell but work like a charm. And I want my gear to work. It ain't a beauty pageant.

I have somehow inhearted a shit load of 357 and 38 revolvers, so i stock piled ammo for them. Kinda why I am going with a J frame instead of a simi lol.

I like the 442. I haven't had any rust issues, but if it may be a concern, go with the 642.

Mine does pocket duty in a Blackhawk pocket holster when I won't be bothered to IWB

just like this 642; those look like Eagle Grips Secret Service, in rosewood. Very good feel, smooth so there's no drag in the pocket.
I use Galco horsehide pocket rigs for all my pocket-size handguns.

Why not spend $900 for a special alloy designed to break your hand.

Got me one and carry it as a bug, had much more enjoyment letting people step up to +P .357 gold-dots.

J-frames are fun wabbit guns with .38 wc. Miss a lot .

In order of preference:

1. 642-1
2. 642-2 with no lock

No lock 442 or 642 with CTC grips in a quality pocket holster. I have a Kydex one from Aholster which has been serving me very well for several years. The lighter guns aren't worth the additional money to me and there's no reason to run the .357s. Spend the money saved on additional practice ammo.
